Netflix has revealed just how much Squid Game people watched in the early days following the streaming series' release -- and the number is astonishing.

Last month, Netflix announced a radical change to how it would share its viewing data, switching from a view-based metric in which the streaming service counted anyone who watched more than two minutes to one that revealed the total number of hours watched. Data using that new measurement reveals that, according to Netflix, viewers watched 1.65 billion hours of Squid Game in its first 28 days on the platform. This makes Squid Game the most-watched TV show in its first 28 days on the platform by a wide margin, with Bridgerton Season 1 coming in second place at 625 million hours.

Squid Game is a Korean survival drama in which a group of 456 indebted people play children's games in hopes of winning a massive cash prize. However, failing any of the games results in death. Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk wrote the script for a film version of Squid Game in 2009, which was inspired by his own experiences with being in broke. However, the project didn't get picked up until 2019.

The project released on Netflix on Sept. 17, where it proved a huge success for the streaming service, earning an impressive a 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Prior to the release of these most recent numbers, Netflix revealed that more than 142 million households viewed Squid Game during its first 28 days on the platform.

Earlier this month, Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed a second season of Squid Game is in the works. He did not provide any additional details about the project, noting that he was still in the planning phases. Netflix has also not yet officially confirmed the series' return.

However, in terms of plot of Squid Game Season 2, Hwang Dong-hyuk said there are a few stories he'd still like to explore, including the relationship between police officer Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon) and his brother, The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun); what happens to Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) after he chooses not to visit his family in the United States; and the recruit, played by Gong Yoo, who gives Gi-hun the card he uses to join the titular survival game.

Squid Game Season 1 is available to stream on Netflix now. The second season does not have a set release date at this time.
