The following contains spoilers for Spy x Family Episode 8, "The Counter-Secret Police Cover Operation," now streaming on Crunchyroll

The day begins like normal for the Forger family, with Anya attending school and her father Loid, aka Twilight, meeting with his superior officer for coffee to inform her of his "daughter's" progress. During the meeting, Loid learns that one of their informants in City Hall was compromised and is told by his superior to be cautious of enemy spies. At City Hall, a man named Jim Hayward is arrested by State Security Service officers on suspicions of being a spy.

Jim's arrest is witnessed by a City Hall staff member, who then discusses Jim's questionable activities with Yor and another coworker in the break room. Shortly after, their coworker Camilla arrives to tell Yor she's been informed about her husband's existence and that her younger brother Yuri is similarly not aware of her marriage. Yor claims to have forgotten to tell Yuri about her husband, which her coworkers find odd considering they've been married for a year on record. Yor then learns Yuri will be calling for a visit and immediately panics when she realizes she hadn't told him her new phone number and address.

In an interrogation room, one of the State Security Service officers questions Jim about the files he leaked from City Hall and sold to an undisclosed individual. Jim refuses to answer the officer's questions and doesn't get very far before a different officer arrives to continue the interrogation; he is revealed to be Yor's younger brother Yuri. During the interrogation, Yuri discloses his sister is also an employee at City Hall and wishes to end the interrogation early so that he could meet her new family. He then provides Jim with pictorial evidence of his secret dealings, which forces him to confess the nature of his business. Yuri wants to know if the person Jim's been selling information to goes by the pseudonym of Twilight and immediately assaults him for his treasonous actions, reasoning he will do whatever it takes to protect his nation.

At the Forger family home, Yor informs Loid her brother will be visiting to congratulate them on their marriage and the couple quickly prepares for his arrival. Loid even goes the extra mile to set up the house to make them look like a real family. On his way to his sister's house, Yuri expresses both excitement and concern about Yor's new family, fearing she may have married someone of questionable character if it took her a year to inform him of her husband. Yuri reaffirms his position to remove all threats from the country, even if that means eliminating his sister's husband.

When Yuri arrives at the Forger family home, Loid also considers the possibility of Yuri being an enemy and must be careful not to let anything slip around him to avoid sabotaging his own mission. After they finally meet, both Yuri and Loid commit themselves to learning as much about each other as possible in order to assess how much of a danger they pose to their individual goals. Yor herself also decides to act the part of the loving wife in her brother's presence so that she doesn't give away the fact she's an assassin. Yuri similarly reminds himself to behave like a civil servant around his sister to hide the fact he is a State Security Services officer.

Getting right down to business, Yuri proceeds to ask his sister why she kept her marriage a secret. Both Loid and Yor anticipated this would happen and had already planned ahead with Yor promising to handle the situation herself. Yor's plan, unfortunately, is to tell Yuri she simply forgot to tell him she had married, which catches both Yuri and Loid completely off guard. Yuri decides to just roll with Yor's excuse, which doesn't make sense to Loid.

At dinner time, Yuri offers Loid some wine with the goal of getting him drunk so that he can expose himself as a dangerous villain. Loid, however, doesn't fall for this tactic and declines to give Yor any wine to keep her from accidentally spilling their "family secrets." Yuri wastes no time in asking all kinds of questions about the nature of their relationship, which makes Loid feel like he is being interrogated by a police officer. With Loid once again not falling for his tactics, Yuri eventually loses his composure and starts drinking heavily. This gives Loid the opening he needs to ask Yuri some questions of his own, namely regarding his own profession. To his knowledge, Yuri is a diplomat who was last seen in Hugaria doing business.

As Yuri shares the details of his trip to Hugaria (a country Loid himself visited as a "medical student"), Loid starts predicting what Yuri will say. When Yuri confirms Loid's suspicions, he immediately recognizes Yuri had read the Ostanian Intelligence Agency's manual for the art of deception and that Yuri is in fact lying about what he actually does for a living. Loid then internally admits he had reservations about Yuri from the beginning since he knew about his past employment at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs -- a well-known entry point for a career in espionage. He had also done a background check on Yuri earlier, which confirmed his past employment at the Ministry, but also that he hadn't been working there for a year. Loid then puts two and two together and figures out Yuri is a State Security Services officer, which may prove useful to him if he plays his cards right.

After calculating the risks of keeping Yuri's company, the latter drunkenly discloses he and Yor grew up very poor, and that his sister worked hard to keep a stream of income flowing. This motivated Yuri to get a high-paying job so that he could protect his sister in return. While Yuri admits to wanting his sister to be married and happy, he also states he'll only accept Loid as Yor's husband if he can protect her better than he can. Without revealing he is the spy Yuri is actually looking for, Loid confirms he'll protect Yor with his life, even though he is "just a psychiatrist" with no combat skills.

Unfortunately, Loid lets slip that the marriage may not be genuine when he accidentally touches Yor's hand in an attempt to clean up a spill from the table. This doesn't go unnoticed by Yuri, who then asks for proof of the couple's intimacy. Specifically, Yuri requests that Loid and his sister kiss in front of him, which puts both Loid and Yor in an uncomfortable position.
