Spring 2022's smash-hit anime Spy x Family has hooked fans for many reasons. Not only is the story of a makeshift family between a spy, assassin and esper entertaining, the anime features both a catchy opening and ending. The opening song, "Mixed Nuts" by Official Hige Dandism, is fast-paced and features piano, drums and guitar. The song's jazzy feel imitates the the show's intense nature.

The ending song "Comedy", written by Gen Hoshino, is more mellow by comparison, and the instruments have a decidedly less intense sound. This accompanies the relaxed nature of the ending video that shows Anya going through life with her family. Upon a closer look at the lyrics, the song reveals Anya's true feelings and love for Yor and Loid.

Spy x Family's Ending Theme: Verse 1

spy x family anya

Fighting with each other

'Til almost everything was in ruins

On this mischievous planet

I've been an outsider since the day I was born

My tears have run dry

The place I'm going back to is in my dreams

Spy x Family's closing theme starts with Anya's memories of the orphanage. Franky said she had been adopted and returned four different times, while Anya had also been transferred from two orphanages. Thus far the anime hasn't revealed much about Anya's past, her biological parents or how she ended up in the orphanage, but a few flashbacks show her in a laboratory.

Anya hates studying, and her flashbacks reveal the scientists had special study times. This studying possibly meant times when she had to train her telepathic powers. When Anya would cry, the scientists told her she "had no time for tears". In the song's fifth line, Anya cried so much that she ran out of tears. She always felt like an outsider due to her powers and kept them a secret out of fear.

Verse 2

Spy x Family Anya and Loid sleeping on a couch.

I met you where I came spilling out

You with all your secrets

Pretending to be normal

I’d given up searching for a place where I belong

Only to find out I had to create one for myself all along

The second verse references when Anya met Loid, and he adopted her. When they first met, Anya read Loid's mind and figured out he was a spy. Upon learning that secret, she ensured he would adopt her because of how exciting having a spy for a dad sounded.

Although Anya is aware of Loid and Yor's true identities, she loves her family -- even when they come up with bad lies to explain their strange behaviors. The last line of the verse explains that with her newfound family, though it may be fake for the sake of Loid's mission, Anya has finally found a sense of belonging. Her parents accept her for who she is despite the trouble she may cause them.

Pre-Chorus

Yor, Anya and Loid Forger in the anime adaptation of Spy X Family

We made a deal that day

Thicker than blood

A pact from heart-to-heart

The pre-chorus is a short phrase that references the new Forger family. When Anya was adopted, she officially became Anya Forger. For her, being accepted into a family was a deal thicker than blood. With how many times she was previously adopted and returned, she'd lost hope, as mentioned in the first verse, that she would ever find a place where she belonged.

Loid finally broke that cycle. Although he only adopted her for his mission, various instances in Spy x Family show how much he cares for her. He played along with her game and rented out a castle to encourage her to go to school. Yor treats Anya like her own daughter and defends her at the grocery store when thugs try to take her.

Chorus

spy x family ending forger family

Shall we hold hands and head home?

What should we eat tonight?

“Here’s what happened today”

That’s what I wanted to talk to you about

Any and every day is

A comedy with you

Dancing on a creaking bed

Rolling around in laughter

We'll keep on with our ridiculous everyday life

The chorus of Spy x Family's closing theme sums up how Anya views her life with Loid and Yor. Every day with the spy and assassin is a comedy for her. She wants to hold hands with them, tell them about her day, and laugh together as they jump on the bed. These lines are reflected in the ending sequence, where Anya is dancing with her parents as they go about their day before eventually tucking her in for bed.

The last line of "we'll keep on with our ridiculous everyday life," tells that while the Forger family may not be perfect, they are always there for one another. Anya loves her parents and the life they've created together.

The closing theme's lyrics help to reveal Anya's love for her family. It also is a reflection of herself and how she felt alone before she met them. The sad lines of loneliness and isolation eventually transition to joy and excitement. The ending song helps to showcase "family" and what it means to be one from the perspective of Anya.
