Robert Rodriguez, Skydance Media and Spyglass Media Group are relaunching the creator's Spy Kids franchise.

According to Deadline, the next film in the Spy Kids franchise will bring Rodriguez back to write and direct the adventures of a multicultural family. Skydance reportedly became intrigued with Spy Kids as a way to diversify its slate of projects. Gary Barber and Peter Oillataguerre of Spyglass will executive produce, with Skydance handling production and development.

The first Spy Kids film was released in 2001 and starred Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino as a retired spy couple who is captured after being pulled back into duty. Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara play their children, who take on the family business in order to rescue their parents. Danny Trejo also starred as the kids' estranged uncle. Other films in the series include 2002's Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams, 2003's Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over and 2011's Spy Kids: All the Time in the World.

We Can Be Heroes, a recent hit on Netflix released on Christmas, is a Robert Rodriguez creation. It stars a group of children who are the offspring of famous superheroes. When their parents are taken prisoner by invading aliens, the kids work together to rescue their parents. Netflix has already greenlit a sequel to We Can Be Heroes.
