The cast and family of Netflix's Spy Kids reboot film are growing.
As reported by Deadline, the film has added actors Gina Rodriguez and Zachary Levi, who are set to play the kids' parents, while the kids themselves will be played by Everly Carganilla and newcomer Connor Esterson.
The new Spy Kids film is "set after the children of the world’s greatest secret agents unwittingly help a powerful game developer unleash a computer virus that gives him control of all technology." To stop this powerful force, the kids are forced to become spies and save their parents, along with the rest of the world.
Levi is predominately known for playing the titular superhero in Warner Bros.' Shazam! and its upcoming sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The sequel was originally scheduled to be released on Dec. 16 but had to be rescheduled for Dec. 21 to avoid clashing with James Cameron's long-awaited Avatar: The Way of Water. Gina Rodriguez, meanwhile, is a Golden Globe-winning actor best known for the CW's Jane the Virgin and, more recently, Scoob! and Netflix's Carmen Sandiego.
The reboot was announced earlier this year with creator Robert Rodriguez attached to write and direct. Later on, it was reported the film, which is being produced by Skydance Media and Spyglass, would be a Netflix exclusive. Co-writing and producing the film is Racer Max, Rodriguez's son, who also wrote 2005's The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D and appeared in Alita: Battle Angel.
The Spy Kids film began in 2001. It starred Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino as a retired spy couple who are captured after stepping back into the espionage game. Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara played the kids, who take on the family business to rescue their parents. Actor Danny Trejo also appeared in the film as the kids' estranged uncle.
Spy Kids was critically praised and became a box office success, earning $147.9 million on a budget of $35 million. It ultimately spawned an entire franchise spanning a decade. It was followed by 2002's Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams, 2003's Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over and 2011's Spy Kids: All the Time in the World.
A release date for Netflix and Rodriguez's new Spy Kids film has not yet been set.
