The Spriggan manga, written by Hiroshi Takashige and illustrated by Ryoji Minagawa, has had one previous anime adaptation, the Spriggan film which was directed by Hirotsugu Kawasaki and released in 1998. The plot of the manga centered on a version of Earth once ruled over by a mysterious and technologically advanced civilization. Although they eventually ended up destroying themselves, this civilization left behind messages which were meant to inform future generations about how they should utilize their civilization's artifacts. Various militaries across the world take up the quest to find and use these artifacts, but all of them are opposed by a powerful organization called the ARCAM Corporation and their Spriggans, the elite agents that work to protect ARCAM's members and prevent the artifacts from falling into the wrong hands. Yuu Ominae, the central protagonist, is one of these Spriggan agents.

The new Spriggan anime will premiere worldwide on Netflix on June 18, with each episode clocking in at around 45 minutes, about double the length of a typical anime episode.
