Most young adults today can remember growing up watching Spongebob Squarepants on Nickelodeon. After all, the series has been airing for more than 20 years and spawned numerous toys, video games and films, with a few spinoffs to come.

Now, Nickelodeon is bringing a fresh perspective on everyone's favorite yellow sponge with a new prequel series, currently titled Kamp Koral, which will center on Spongebob as a 10-year-old. The series will see the fun-loving sponge spending summer with his friends, building fires and chasing jellyfish at Camp Yuckymuck in the middle of the underwater forest.

This is the first of the planned spinoff projects to be given the go-ahead. Spongebob Squarepants producers Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller will co-executive produce the prequel series, which will run for a mere 13 episodes. Unlike the main series, Kamp Koral will not feature 2D-animation and will instead be an entirely CG-animated series, not unlike The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (directed by Paul Tibbitt and Mike Mitchell).

Commenting on Nickelodeon's decision to give the prequel series the green light, Ramsey Naito, head of animation at Nickelodeon stated, "SpongeBob has an incredible universe to expand upon and the greenlight for Kamp Koral is a testament to the strength and longevity of these characters known and loved by generations of fans around the world."
