Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, which sees SpongeBob and his friends on a mission to find a missing Gary, whom SpongeBob believes was snail-napped.

The film, which Patrick describes as a "buddy movie," finds SpongeBob and Patrick embarking on a series of misadventures ranging from getting swept up by the bright lights of a flashy casino/amusement park to crossing paths with a sage-like sagebrush named Sage, played by Keanu Reeves.

The trailer also teases SpongeBob and Gary's first meeting, which happened when SpongeBob was just a young sponge attending a summer camp called Camp Coral. The two have been best friends ever since, which makes SpongeBob all the more determined to find the missing snail.

All the standard Bikini Bottom residents make an appearance in the trailer, with it appearing that Sandy, Mr. Krabs and Squidward learn of SpongeBob and Patrick's quest and embark on their own separate adventure to go after them in Sandy's new Burger-mobile.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run is the third theatrical SpongeBob Squarepants movie and the second one to be made in a 3D live-action animated style after The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water in 2015.
