When one thinks about cosplay, one usually thinks of really awesome, complex, and usually pretty attractive characters, people who will translate really well into cool and often really impressive costumes that have clearly taken a lot of time and energy on the part of the cosplayer.

But every once in a while, a cosplay trend pops up that is just a bit weird but which definitely shows the creativity and sense of humor of the cosplay community. But these cosplayers have gone all out to create very authentic and amusing versions of this beloved cartoon character.

10 Going To The Krabby Patty

The very first thing SpongeBob does in the very first episode of SpongeBob SquarePants is march himself down to Krabby Patty to start his job there. He’s always enthusiastic about his work, even if his boss isn't the best guy, and he’s excellent at making a delicious Krabby Patty burger. So this cosplayer posing with a spatula, and a cartoon burger to boot, is a perfect representation of Spongebob, especially with the giant gap-toothed smile he always has on his face at work.

9 Going To Work

SpongeBob spends a huge majority of his time working at Krabby Patty, so it’s no surprise that a lot of cosplayers like to recreate this look. This cosplayer has gone for a femme SpongeBob interpretation, giving the character long hair, but they’re still posed with a spatula, since making Krabby Patties is SpongeBob’s favorite activity. The hat is perfect on this cosplay as well, a great interpretation of the tiny hat SpongeBob wears on his big square head.

8 Who Lives In A Pineapple

This cosplayer went all in on SpongeBob’s look in a way that most cosplayers don’t by covering their face completely in makeup in order to get the right look for SpongeBob’s sponge-yellow skin. They paid close attention to all of the details, not just painting themselves yellow but also adding brown spots that resemble the holes in SpongeBob’s sponge. They also used contacts to replicate his big blue eyes and added freckles and long lashes to give him his youthful appearance.

7 Closet Cosplay

This cosplayer did a closet cosplay version of SpongeBob. This essentially means that they took some clothes that they already had available from their own wardrobe, or from previously done cosplays, and used the wardrobe pieces to make an outfit similar to that of a character from a series. The white button down top, red tie, and khaki shorts are all perfect pieces to create SpongeBob’s usual outfit, though the hat probably needed to be made specially for the look.

6 Rosy Cheeks

This cosplayer has focused on really getting SpongeBob’s complexion right and focusing on the details of his face. SpongeBob is sweet and happy most of the time, and it’s definitely reflected in his face. He has rosy cheeks and a red nose, like he’s been laughing and happy all day and is ready for some good times with his friends.

This cosplayer focused on getting that look right, adding some freckles and some heavy eye makeup to reflect SpongeBob’s long eyelashes.

5 Spongebob The Musical

This cosplayer has recreated the look of a different version of SpongeBob. Instead of the cartoon, they cosplayed the character as he appears in SpongeBob SquarePants The Musical. SpongeBob has a different look in the musical, with him being played by a human actor, and his outfit is slightly different from the cartoon as well. This cosplayer has done a great job of recreating the look though, especially with the very specific sponge yellow of his shirt.

4 Do You Want A Krabby Patty?

Clearly, posing as SpongeBob with a Krabby Patty is the most iconic way of representing this amazing character. That makes sense because, despite Squidward’s feelings that his job at Krabby Patty is beneath him, SpongeBob really loves his job, and he does his best to do it as well as he can. In fact, he’s well-known for making really great Krabby Patties, and that makes sense since he puts so much love and attention into each other. This cosplayer has even posed with felt, homemade Krabby Patty all their own.

3 Imagination

This cosplayer has photoshopped a rainbow over their head as a reference to one of SpongeBob’s most iconic moments: when he encourages Squidward to use his imagination, citing all of the fun that he and his best friend Patrick are having with just a cardboard box and their own sense of fun. This cosplayer has also used a pair of large, round black glasses to achieve the look of SpongeBob’s noticeably long black eyelashes, which is a unique take on the character.

2 Femme Spongebob

Wherever a person goes on the internet, they’re likely to find a gender swapped version of one of their favorite characters. Of course, SpongeBob SquarePants isn’t immune to this rule, and this cosplayer has done a great job of considering what SpongeBob might look like if he was a girl.

The crimped yellow wig looks a lot like SpongeBob’s recognizable yellow sponge skin, and the freckles are a cute representation of the spongy holes in SpongeBob’s face.

1 I’m Ready!

SpongeBob’s best known catchphrase is “I’m ready!” It’s how he starts every day, and it’s a mantra that he uses to convince himself that he’s prepared for any situation and whatever the day is going to bring him. This cosplay really channels that energy, with the cosplayer running excitedly toward the camera with a big smile on their face. This is a great, straightforward interpretation of SpongeBob’s costume as well, with a simple white shirt and brown corduroy pants.
