Squidward Tentacles is an obvious opposite to SpongeBob. While SpongeBob is excited to work at the Krusty Krab, Squidward is miserable. SpongeBob cares little of making a fool of himself while Squidward cares a whole lot about what others think of him.

Through the eyes of children who watched SpongeBob SquarePants through their childhood, Squidward was anti-fun. Today as adults though, a lot of fans now see themselves in Squidward. Everyone realized as adults that Squidward had a right to his depression, anxiety, and anger.

While a lot is obvious about Squidward’s character, there are some facts that are a little less known.

10 He’s An Octopus

This little known fact came straight from the mouth of the show’s creator, Stephen Hillenburg. It was mentioned on a segment from the DVD of the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. While that was stated back in 2005, still a lot of fans do not know this fact.

Who can blame fans being confused anyway, when Squidward has six instead of eight tentacles and “squid” is in his name? It was revealed that Squidward’s lack of eight tentacles was because the creator did not want to torture the animation team.

"I like the octopus because they have such a bulbous head. And Squidward thinks he's an intellectual, so of course he's gonna have a large, bulbous head," Hillenburg said.

9 He Almost Had Plankton’s Voice

Squidward is voiced by Rodger Bumpass but before Bumpass, Doug Lawrence was considered for the role. Hillenburg decided that Lawrence’s voice was more suited for Plankton, the villain of the series. Imagine, we could have had Plankton’s voice coming out of Squidward!

Hillenburg made a good call, since Bumpass knocked Squidward’s voice out of the park from his nasally monotone voice to his many emotional outbursts. According to Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob, when Bumpass would do one of Squidwards angry outbursts, his entire head would turn red. “You're afraid he's going to have an embolism,” said Kenny. Well, that is dedication!

8 Had His Own Shorts Called “Astrology With Squidward”

From 2000 to 2001, SpongeBog SquarePants had shorts of Squidward giving horoscopes for each of the zodiac signs. Each short would start with Squidward playing on his clarinet and then congratulate the birthday of a zodiac sign and then get into predictions. At the end, he always said, “I'm Squidward, your Nicktoon astrologer.”

Through the shorts, we do learn the zodiac signs of the various characters. For example, Patrick is Tauros and SpongeBog is Sagittarius.

As far as we know however, the shorts ended before the completion of all the zodiac signs.

7 He Used To Have Blonde Hair

This information was learned in the episode “The Original Fry Cook” that aired in season five. When the fry cook before Spongebob, Jim, visits, Squidward remembers back when the Krusty Krab had “class.” We learn that back then, Squidward had blonde hair but it all fell out.

The fact is a bit of an inconsistency for some fans. In the Battle for Bikini Bottom video game, Squidward says that he has always been bald.

6 Has A Couple Allergies

According to various episodes, Squidward’s allergies include newsprint, nuts, snail slime, and seaberries. We learn about the newsprint allergy in the episode “Can you spare a dime?” from season three. However, most fans consider that Squidward lied in this episode in order to avoid getting a job since we see him hold newspapers in other episodes with no harm done.

The seaberry allergy is from the episode, “Restraining SpongeBob” in season eight. His face swells after getting his face smashed in seaberry pie. In season four episode, “Once Bitten,” we learn about Squidward’s allergy to snail slime.

5 Character Resembling Squidward Anime Cameo

A character that looked like Squidward appeared in the anime Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. It’s very odd, since the animation style of SpongeBob SquarePants is far from an Japanese anime. However, in anime like Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann where there are odd creatures, why not have a Squidward-like character?

What’s amazing is how quickly this small cameo was noticed. The character only got about five seconds of screen time and was off to the side. Who was the first to notice this?

4 Ikardo Tentacles

In the Japanese version of SpongeBob SquarePants, Squidward keeps his last name but gets a first name change. He became Ikardo. Sounds nothing like Squidward, but the translators had their reasons. Ikardo is based off of the Japanese word for squid, “ikara.” They combined their word for squid with Ricardo to make it more name-like.

What’s funny is that Squidward is still an octopus but Japan decided to still name him off of the word for squid to keep him similar to his original name.

3 His Father Appeared In A Book

In the season three episode “Krab Borg,” Squidward mentions his dad. In fact, he mentioned that his dad loved him very much after SpongeBob made up the fact that Squidward’s dad never hugged him. Despite the mention, we never see the father in the TV series.

However there was a picture book that his father appeared in called Hooray for Dad! We also learn his name: Jeff Tentacles. As any fan can imagine, Jeff looks just like Squidward except his shirt is a different color and he has glasses and a tie.

2 Mentioned In Avengers: Infinity War

Tony Stark has a lot of great nicknames for various characters that are callbacks to various cultural references. For example, he has called Hawkeye Legolas, Loki Rock of Ages, and Thor Point Break. So in Infinity War, Stark called Ebony Maw Squidward. The line was “He means get lost Squidward,” after Doctor Strange tells Ebony Maw to leave.

This was hilarious in Ebony Maw looks a little like Squidward, but he is a force to be reckoned with at the same time.

1 Was Almost Octoward

Squidward Shouting in Spongebob Squarepants

So with Squidward being an octopus, his original name was going to be Octoward. This was mentioned in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie extra content on DVD by the voice actor himself. According to the actor the name Octoward “just didn’t work.” So they replaced the “octo” with “squid” and hence a famous character was born.
