In a time where supervillains are becoming more sympathetic and receiving redemption arcs, one thing that will never change is that Nazi supervillains will always be despised. Especially the kind made of bees. If that sounds strangely specific, that's because it's referring to a villain that can't escape bee-related puns, Swarm.

This isn't just a Nazi that controls bees; he is made of bees. He is a hive-mind (pardon the pun) of a colony of bees that he wills to do his bidding. There's a lot to unload about this bad guy but not enough time to cover it in one list. So for now, here are ten things to know about Spider-Man's villain, Swarm.

10 His Origin

Swarm used to be ordinary Nazi Fritz von Meyer, one of Hitler's top scientists until the war ended and he fled to South America to become a beekeeper. It was there he discovered a hive of bees that were irradiated by a meteorite. Fritz attempted to study and control them but the bees turned on Fritz and devoured him leaving only his skeleton. His consciousness merged with the bees allowing him to take control of them and integrate his skeleton into the humanoid mass of bees. He went on to become a supervillain called Swarm but it took a while for him to face Spider-Man.

Before encountering Spider-Man, Swarm's first encounter with superheroes was with the Champions. While he was chasing a federal agent who stole his hive's queen bee, he ran into the Champions as they bid bon voyage to their friend Black Widow. Naturally, the two clashed and Swarm freed the queen bee allowing it to mutate and grow gigantic. In the end, he was thwarted by Hercules who tossed the queen miles away causing the hive to follow leaving Fritz's skeleton. Like many supervillains before him, Swarm was resurrected and when he did, it was at an institute Peter Parker happened to be working at as a teaching assistant.

8 Referenced in Marvel's Spider-Man

As hard as it is to believe that Swarm could ever exist outside of the comics, he has made his way into Marvel's Spider-Man. Throughout the game, the player receives blurbs from J. Jonah Jameson's podcast and hear him convince callers that Spider-Man is a menace.

During one segment, he vaguely describes several supervillains that have come into existence since Spider-Man started fighting crime. One of the threats he loudly describes as "Nazis made of bees!" and it's pretty easy to deduce who that is. Time will tell if ends up making a cameo in the upcoming Avengers game.

7 Swarm's Appearance In Spider-Man: Velocity

The PS4 exclusive received a tie-in comic summarizing the main story, the DLC pack "City That Never Sleeps", and an additional original storyline in Spider-Man: Velocity. The comic centers around Spider-Man dealing with a speedster that's running rampant through New York but before that, he has another villain to deal with. At the start, Spider-Man is in the middle of a brawl with Swarm and getting his butt handed to him. Unfortunately, Swarm doesn't have a significant role in the rest of the comic apart from a brief appearance later on. Maybe he'll at least make a return in the follow-up game.

6 Was Included in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark

It feels like a lifetime ago that Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark was on everyone's mind. The musical is infamous for all the incidents that occurred during production rather than its story. Without going into detail, Spider-Man winds up fighting this musical's version of the Sinister Six featuring an unconventional roster. Along with the addition of a brand new villain named Swiss Miss, Swarm is also added to the group for no apparent reason. Although this wouldn't be the last Sinister Six he was part of.

5 Made His Own Sinister Six

There have been a lot of subpar supervillain groups that tried to copy the Sinister Six and Swarm's iteration is no exception. During Spider-Man's run as a teacher at Jean Grey's School For High, Swarm leads his iteration of the Sinister Six against the wall-crawler.

However, his version was composed of lower-tier villains like 8-Ball, Delilah, and the Squid. Maybe if the group put up more of a fight and didn't surrender the moment Swarm was taken out they would have been held in higher regard. Still, it's not the worst loss Swarm experienced.

4 Venom Ate His Skeleton

There was a time when Swarm came close to defeating a team of superheroes. During the Secret Invasion, Norman Osborn's Thunderbolts were sent to stop Swarm when he attacked a Colorado town. Songbird, Swordsman, and the rest of the team were no match Swarm once he was giant-sized and the situation looked bleak. Their last ace up their sleeve was to release Venom, who proceeded to tear Fritz's skeleton from the hive and devour it. It was a brutal defeat and it wouldn't be the last time

3 Lost to Squirrel Girl

Challenging the girl who took down Thanos is generally not a good idea but apparently Swarm thought it would be easy. In a special interactive CYOA story, Squirrel Girl teamed up with Koi Boy to face off against Swarm where the ending varies depending on the reader's choice.

Some endings end with him conquering the world but in the official ending, they soak him in water and stuff his bees into garbage bags. It's pretty embarrassing to be taken to a police precinct in garbage bags by a guy named Koi Boy. Still, it's understandable since he was up against a worthy, superpowered opponent.

2 Lost to Mary Jane And Her Theater Crew

Now losing to someone that doesn't even have powers, that's a completely different issue. Specifically, Spectacular Spider-Man #62, when Peter Parker's identity was unveiled and Scorpion's Exterminators were after the webhead. Among the members was Swarm, who spied on Mary Jane and attacked her during a rehearsal. With her co-stars' help, they dropped a sandbag and a curtain on him, set off the sprinklers, and bashed the skeleton's skull in with a prop mace saving the day. Surely, there isn't a defeat more humiliating than that. Right?

1 Lost To Doop and the Power of Funk

There's no shame in being beaten by a beloved character like Venom or Mary Jane but to be beaten by Doop is a different story. For those unfamiliar with the little green blob, he's an experiment from the Cold War that went on to work with the X-Men. Don't be fooled by his appearances. Swarm made that mistake when he attacked the X-Mansion and dared to challenge Doop. Instead of being beaten by water or damaging his skeleton, Doop summoned the Power of the Funk to obliterate his opponents. Teaching readers a valuable lesson: don't underestimate the power of music.
