We all know that Spider-Man does whatever a spider can and most of that is based on the superpowers he possesses. He can stick to walls, he's super strong, has incredible agility and balance, and who could forget his spider-sense (which tingles, apparently)? However, none of those powers could be utilized properly without the most important part of Spider-man's persona: his suit. While most people might think that Spider-Man's suit is simply made of fabric and just covers him up from head to toe, the truth is that there is actually a lot more going on underneath the red and blue. Not only that, but Spider-Man has actually worn many suits in his lifetime, each of them with its own specific capabilities.

His red and blue suit might be the most recognizable, but he has also worn four different types of Spider Armor. On top of that, he also has the Iron Spider suit, which was designed by Tony Stark, and the four different suits he wore when he had to adopt different identities to clear his name. On top of all of those, there is also, of course, the classic symbiote suit. With its fully black design and white eyes and spider emblem, it created a lasting image that even the most casual Spider-Man fans are able to recognize. However, these suits all gave Spider-Man an edge in different ways. Some of these capabilities aren't known to the average person, but they are truly useful when it comes to saving the world. These are 20 hidden powers of Spider-Man's suit that only real fans know about.

20 EYEPIECES PROTECT AGAINST HYPNOTIC ATTACKS

One of Spider-Man's most defining characteristics is his big eyes. Those eyepieces on his suit serve a number of purposes. They are made of reflective glass so that people can't see inside but Spidey can see out and they also keep any dust or debris from messing with his vision while he swings through the city.

On top of all of that though, the eyes are also designed to defend Spidey against any hypnotic attacks, particularly the ones from his enemy the Iguana. That kind of edge can come in really handy when dealing with enemies who aren't just going to throw punches.

19 THE MASK MUFFLE'S PETER'S VOICE

Spider-Man is one of only a few heroes out there who has a mask that covers his entire face. This was by design, originally. Stan Lee wanted any kid to be able to put themselves in Spider-Man's shoes and imagine themselves as a hero. It was a truly egalitarian approach to superhero design.

However, the full face mask has also been said to have a useful effect on concealing Peter Parker's identity. In addition to covering his entire face, the mask also muffles his voice enough that no one would be able to easily recognize it. That's a pretty handy feature to have, considering what a motormouth Spidey can be!

18 EARPIECES PROTECT AGAINST SONIC ATTACKS

Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man #310

On top of the mask muffling Peter's voice and the eyepieces protecting against hypnotic attacks, Peter has gone so far as to add even more tech to the suit to give him an edge in any fight. One of the later additions to the suit was a set of earpieces that could protect him against sonic attacks from his enemies.

This came in especially handy when Spider-Man would fight the Hobgoblin, who utilized sonic attacks to disorient Peter and throw him off his usually perfect balance. These additions to the suit show that on top of being a strong and agile hero, Spider-Man is also a gifted scientific genius.

17 IT HAS A UTILITY BELT UNDERNEATH

Spider-Man Homecoming

When most people hear the phrase "utility belt," they immediately think of a certain superhero who wears a cape, has a mask with pointy ears, and is usually not in a very good mood. However, this article isn't about that guy, it's about Spider-Man! And the fact of the matter is that Spidey has his own utility belt.

The belt is worn under his standard blue and red costume, and it is where he houses his replacement web cartridges, his camera (he has to bring Jameson more pictures of Spider-Man somehow!), and also his handy spider-tracers. The belt was featured more prominently on the outside of the suit in Spider-Man: Homecoming, where it also included one of his most classic features.

16 THE BELT PRODUCES THE "SPIDER-SIGNAL"

The feature mentioned above is, of course, the Spider-signal! What, you thought that the guy with the cape and pointy ears was the only hero who had a signal? Think again! Spider-Man's utility belt has always had the power to project Spidey's face onto any surface (another feature included in the MCU, shown at the end of Captain America: Civil War).

The Spider-signal may not have a lot of defensive properties, but it can be used to intimidate criminals and also illuminate any dark rooms that Spider-Man might find himself in. He might not use it as much these days, but he really relishes any opportunity he gets to shine his face on someone.

15 WEB SHOOTERS CAN FIRE SPIDER-TRACERS

Spider-Man using a spider-tracer

One of Spider-Man's most often forgotten tools is his spider-tracer, the small, spider-shaped modules that he sticks to people he needs to keep track of. In older stories, Spidey would often just pull one out of his utility belt and throw it at someone, which seems like a pretty iffy way to do things.

Luckily, Spider-Man is a smart guy and figured out a way to modify his web shooters so that he could fire his spider-tracers from them, which seems like a much better idea. The spider-tracers have gone through their own changes over the years, from working with a radio transmitter to being tuned in to Peter's spider-sense so he could follow them that way.

14 THE SYMBIOTE SUIT CAN CONTROL PETER'S BODY IN HIS SLEEP

Spider-Man Symbiote Suit Secret Wars

Aside from Spider-Man's classic red and blue suit, the one that most fans recognize is the black symbiote suit which he acquired during the "Secret Wars" storyline. Spider-Man was given the suit after his old one got damaged. He put it in a machine to try and fix it, only to discover that the machine was actually housing a dangerous alien symbiote.

One of the side effects of Peter's new suit being its own living organism was that it had a mind of its own. After waking up severely tired every day, Peter went to Reed Richards for help. Richards revealed that the alien suit had been controlling Peter's body in his sleep, taking him out swinging through the city all night, every night.

13 THE RICOCHET SUIT UTILIZED BOUNCING DISKS

Peter Parker's alterate identity RIcochet in Marvel Comics

At one point in Spider-Man's career, he was accused by his enemy Norman Osborn of a crime he didn't commit. This made it impossible for Peter to wear the blue and red suit in the open, as Spider-Man had quickly become public enemy number one. Instead, he had to wear other suits and pose as new heroes in order to clear his name.

As Ricochet, Peter relied mostly on his enhanced agility and did not use his other spider-powers to better hide his identity. What he used instead of his web shooters were four bouncing disks which were stored on the sleeves of his jacket. These disks were a lot like Captain America's shield, in that they could, well, ricochet off of surfaces and be used to attack enemies.

12 THE DUSK SUIT ALLOWED PETER TO FLY

The Dusk suit might be one of Peter Parker's least known outfits. He was given this suit when he entered the Negative Zone. There, a group of rebels, who were fighting against Blastaar, bestowed the suit upon Peter after seeing his abilities. After the rebel victory, Peter was allowed to keep the suit and return home.

The Dusk suit allowed Peter to create another new persona while clearing his name and it also granted him some extra powers. Not only did the suit allow Peter to become practically invisible in the shadows, but it allowed him to fly longer distances than any of the other suits he had worn. After clearing his name, Peter abandoned all of his new identities.

11 IRON SPIDER COULD CHANGE ITS APPEARANCE

Spidey Threads Iron Spider

The Iron Spider suit may be one of the most famous alternate suits that Peter Parker has ever worn. It was built for him by Tony Stark during the "Civil War" storyline of Marvel comics, and it quickly became one of his most popular suits. It would go on to influence many of the features of the MK IV Spider Armor.

One of the features of the Iron Spider suit was that it could change its appearance at Peter's will. This was similar to how the symbiote suit could take on the appearance of any regular outfit. It allowed Peter to be able to have the suit ready to go at all times without worrying about having to conceal it.

10 IRON SPIDER HAD LIMITED GLIDING CAPABILITIES

The Iron Spider suit had so many incredible features that it would take way too long to list all of them. Along with being able to change its appearance, the suit also featured three extra limbs (known as waldoes), plus a plethora of offensive and defensive capabilities that lent Peter Parker an edge in any fight.

One of the abilities that some fans might forget about, however, is that the suit had limited gliding capabilities. It would produce webbing on the arms that allowed Spider-Man to glide for a certain amount of time before detaching them. This was similar to the ability seen during the Washington Monument scene in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

9 IRON SPIDER COULD DETACH PIECES OF ITSELF

Iron Spider Damaged Civil War

The Iron Spider suit had a lot of hidden capabilities that were seemingly endless and yet provided a useful application at any time. One of the other aspects of the Iron Spider suit that most fans might forget about is the fact that it can detach any part of itself and be used to handle hazardous material.

This feature of the suit would be useful when Spider-Man needed to handle any sort of radioactive or otherwise dangerous material that could not be handled without a protective layer. It's the kind of feature that isn't used very often, but when it is needed, it's great to have.

8 IRON SPIDER HAD A SUPPLY OF COMPRESSED AIR

On top of all those previous features, the Iron Spider suit also featured a number of cautionary measures should Spider-Man ever find himself in a situation outside of his normal routine. For example, what would happen if Spider-Man ended up underwater or just in a situation where it was hard for him to take a breath?

Not to worry! The Iron Spider suit came equipped with a limited supply of compressed air so that Spider-Man could essentially use it as a temporary scuba suit. There was only enough air for Spider-Man to be underwater for about eight minutes, but that would usually be more than enough time for the web-slinger to get himself out of trouble.

7 THE MK II SPIDER ARMOR HAD MAGNETIC WEBBING

Spider-Man wears the bulletproof black and gold-trimmed Armor Mark II

The MK II Spider Armor was a major upgrade from Spider-Man's original armored suit (the one that most people might recognize and was actually used as a power-up in the original Spider-Man video game for PlayStation and N64). Not only was it sleeker and more lightweight than the original armor, but it had some major tech upgrades as well.

One of those upgrades was the built-in web shooters, which were not only able to fire Spidey's normal web fluid, but also a magnetic webbing which could interfere with radio signals. This would be the kind of thing that could come in handy when a villain is using a radio signal for robotic mercenaries or mind-control.

6 MK III SPIDER ARMOR HAD THE PINK HIPPO APP

Of course, progress cannot be stopped, and the MK II Spider Armor eventually had to be upgraded to something more technologically advanced. Enter the MK III Spider Armor, which had a whole host of new capabilities. One of those technological advances happened to be an app with a rather silly name.

The Pink Hippo app, as it is named, is a program within the MK III Armor that was used to take down Sandman. After spraying his body with radioactive material, Spidey located one grain of sand that was controlling Sandman's entire physiology. He used the app to connect to the grain and used it to change Flint Marko's form against his will.

5 MK III HAD ENHANCED AUDIO CAPABILITIES

On top of the Pink Hippo app, the MK III armor also served many other purposes in fighting Spider-Man's enemies. One of its most useful features was an enhanced audio receiver, which could tune in on incredibly low frequencies. Spidey used this feature of the suit to locate Chameleon by recognizing his unique heartbeat.

What was really interesting about this feature is that it was inspired by another hero that Spider-Man would often encounter: Daredevil. Spider-Man recognized that Daredevil's ability to hear almost every single sound around him and tune in on specific ones could be utilized by him to find criminals as well.

4 MK IV SPIDER ARMOR HAD ACIDIC WEBBING

PS4 Spider-Man Spider-Armor Mk IV Alex Ross

Peter Parker designed the MK IV Spider Armor after Parker Industries became a worldwide success. The MK IV armor differed from other designs in that it was super lightweight and did not slow Peter down while he wore it. It was also made from nanotechnology that was able to respond to Parker's mental and vocal commands.

On top of that, the MK IV armor had far more capabilities when it came to webbing. One of the additional web settings the suit offered was acidic webbing. This specialized web fluid was made from a highly concentrated acid that could melt through solid steel. It was by far one of the more important additions to the suit, but things didn't stop there.

3 MK IV HAS CONCRETE WEBBING THAT COULD STOP THE HULK

On top of the incredibly powerful acid webbing that the MK IV Spider Armor housed, there were also other numerous web settings. Included among those was a quick-drying concrete webbing. This might seem like an odd kind of webbing to have on hand, but it had some really useful applications.

The concrete webbing that was used in the MK IV armor was far more powerful than the stuff that is used to make sidewalks. It was so strong that it was able to stop both the Hulk and the Aztec god Itzpapalotl. IT was also strong enough to hold up an entire collapsing skyscraper.

2 MK IV HOUSED NUMEROUS ANTIDOTES FOR ALMOST ANY POISON

Peter Parker comes up against a lot of different threats from the villains he faces, and the entire point of the MK IV armor is to be able to defend against any possible attacks. While facing the villain, Zodia c, Spider-Man was threatened by the use of a Poison that had been stolen from S.H.I.E.L.D.

To be ready for any possible poison attacks, Peter equipped the armor with a variety of antitoxins that could counteract nearly any poison attack that might come his way. This proved to be useful in fighting him and Peter ended up using the antitoxins at his disposal more than once.

1 SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN SUIT PROTECTS AGAINST MIND-SWITCHING

In one of the most massive twists in recent comic book history, Doctor Octopus switched his consciousness with Peter Parker, leaving the hero to pass inside Doc's terminally sick body. Now, with his mind inside Parker's body, Otto Octavius has promised to be a superior Spider-Man.

He even designed a new suit for himself, which includes four extra limbs (an obvious nod to his previous identity). However, the suit also has a hidden feature. It protects against any sort of mind-switching by anyone else. It makes sense that Octavius would think to take that precaution, but honestly, who else would try to do that?
