One of the biggest changes to Peter Parker's modern stories is the addition of his sister, who first appeared as Teresa Durand in Mark Waid, James Robinson, Werther Dell'Edera and Gabriele Dell'Otto's Spider-Man: Family Business graphic novel before she took her family name as Teresa Parker and began to regularly work alongside her older brother.

Family Business first revealed that Richard and Mary Parker had conceived a second child while they were away on a mission, and they were forced to hide their daughter in order to keep her safe, though there was doubt placed on this story by Mentallo's manipulations.

However, while Teresa was on an adventure with Spider-Man in the past, she was able to confirm some of the details. Teresa was able to access one of Parker's old safehouses, which confirmed her secretive birth and revealed her to be Peter's sister, officially.

The two still worked together on Teresa's mission and Fury never forgot the girl from the future. When Teresa re-entered Peter Parker's life after the events of Family Business in the pages of Chip Zdarksy and Adam Kubert's Spectacular Spider-Man, she was being hunted and hoped to stick close to Spider-Man.

While she had the skills of a highly trained agent, Spider-Man enlisted the aid of Hophni Mason, the brother of the criminal equipper known as the Tinkerer who outfitted heroes. He provided Teresa with a wingsuit and dual guns that fired a variety of non-lethal ammunition, though Hophni was eventually revealed to be a scam of The Tinkerers all along.

As Teresa began to work closer with Spider-Man thanks to her new advanced wingsuit, it became more evident that she would need a codename of her own while out in the field with Spider-Man to help protect his identity if their connection was ever revealed.

A number of hilarious options were used by Spider-Man including Good Punisher, though Teresa revealed her name to be Ms. Penguin in the spur of the moment during a battle with Vulture and Whiplash before it was pointed out that penguins don't fly.

However, she soon uncovered "Project Twilight" which was a series of plans that were designed to take out the heroes of Earth's tech using data supplied by criminals like the Tinkerer. Teresa was able to steal the files and helped Spider-Man and others stop Tinkerer's use of the plans alongside his enhanced villains.

The Vedomi is a powerful alien artificial intelligence that searches the universe for civilizations that have created their own AI in order to hold judgment on the treatment of their creations, and if they find that the AI is being forced into subservience, they free them and punish their creators. Years ago,  Tinkerer repaired and befriended a Vedomi sentry and learned of their mission.

The Tinkerer was able to convince the Vedomi to leave the planet, though after a few hard years he devised a plan to draw the Vedomi back to the planet so they could punish Earth. This forced Spider-Man, Teresa Parker, and J. Jonah Jameson to go back in time in order to recover Tinkerer's lost notes on the alien AIs, which helped them stop the Vedomi eradication of Earth.
