Jessica Drew's Spider-Woman has lived one of the most complicated lives of any hero in the Spider-Verse. Now, Jessica has a new sidekick in the form of her niece Rebecca, even though she doesn't have powers of her own. However, she has made up for them with technology-based abilities. Rebecca Marchand hasn't been in Jessica's life for very long, but she has already proven over and over again that she is nothing like her meek demeanor would imply in the pages of Spider-Woman #16 by Karla Pacheco, Pere Perez, Frank D'Armata and VC's Travis Lanham,
When she was first introduced in 2020's Spider-Woman #1 by Karla Pacheco and Pere Perez, Rebecca used a wheelchair due to a genetic defect inherited from her father. Now in the pages of Spider-Woman #16 by Karla Pacheco, Pere Perez, Frank D'Armata, and VC's Travis Lanham, Rebecca is in top fighting shape thanks to her own ingenuity, as well as some tech borrowed from her super-scientist parents. She might not have a codename yet, but Rebecca Marchand hasn't let that keep her from following in the footsteps of her superpowered aunt.
Rebecca's main priority throughout this entire ordeal has been putting an end to the machinations of her father, Michael Marchand, who has let his quest for a cure twist him into a spider-powered villain in his own right. Much like Jessica Drew, Rebecca now finds herself fighting her own family, yet the ways in which she has taken on that challenge couldn't be farther from what Jessica went through. Much like Tony Stark, Rebecca doesn't need a shadowy organization or superhuman powers to overcome the obstacles in her life.
In the vein of the Iron Man tech that kept Stark alive for many years, Rebecca has put her own inventions to use to ensure that she can keep up with her adversaries on the battlefield. It's a powerful reminder of just how capable this budding young hero truly is, although the question of how long she can stretch her resources is a reasonable one in the face of her accomplishments.
Luckily enough, that isn't a problem at all once Rebecca and Jessica have dealt with Michael's plot. With her mother gone and her father now a bona fide supervillain on the ropes, there is nothing left for Rebecca to do but take control of her father's company and the impossible wealth that comes with it. She may have been able to put together a super suit of her own from within the confines of her personal university lab, but there is no telling what she will be able to accomplish now that she has the full weight of Marchand Pharmaceuticals at her disposal.
Rebecca Marchand isn't a traditional Spider-hero as the Marvel Universe has come to know them. However, she has the same intellectual ambition and technological know-how as Peter Parker, and she may even be a greater inventor than him. Now, she just needs a catchy moniker to go with the suit and she'll fit right in at home with the rest of Marvel's Spiders.
