The interdimensional titan Dormammu made his live action debut in Doctor Strange. The enormous, menacing being threatened to overtake Earth, but Doctor Strange saved the day by using the Time Stone, trapping himself and Dormammu in an endless time loop. Strange orders Dormammu and his assailants to leave Earth or be stuck in the loop for eternity. Eventually, the villain caves to the bargain and leaves Earth.

Doctor Strange needed the Time Stone to stop the titan, but Spider-Woman in the 1979 cartoon finds a new and creative way to cast Dormammu out of the mortal realm. Strange failed to stop Dormammu from forming a bridge to Earth, and instead had to bore Dormammu into leaving willingly. Spider-Woman just figured out a way to force Dormammu back, and managed to beat him by just altering the trajectory of the moon.

Dormammu, Master of Darkness

There are a few key differences between the Dormammu of the Marvel Cinematic Universe film and Spider-Woman's Dormammu. For one, his iconography is more associated with the demonic than in the cartoon. Kaeillicius and his henchmen in the film use extra-dimensional magic to conjure Dormammu. He is beyond human comprehension, too large and too powerful to even witness in his entirety. He is something out of a Lovecraft story.

In the cartoon, his summoners conjure him using burning pentagrams, one of which he has emblazoned on his chest. He is far smaller, being about as tall as a building rather than a planet. However, he's still an interdimensional titan who long ago conquered the Realm of Darkness. He has his eyes set on conquering Earth as well, but in order to do that, he must cast the Earth into darkness.

In the second episode of the Spider-Woman cartoon, "Realm of Darkness," Dormammu's plan is to use a rocket to push the Moon into a permanent eclipse. He has very little power ordinarily, only managing to conjure up his appearance while his servants do most of the heavy lifting. He manages to trap Spider-Woman in the Realm of Darkness long enough to enact his plan.

Once the permanent eclipse begins, Dormammu manifests his whole essence into the physical world, meaning he can start his conquest of the planet. However, he forgot one thing: Jessica Drew is on the case.

Jessica Drew Literally Moves a Moon to Stop Dormammu

Jessica realizes that Dormammu can only materialize in permanent darkness, so she figures the best solution would be to subject Dormammu to light. As Dormammu fires off cosmic energy at Jessica, she hides behind a satellite, which redirects the blast into space. It strikes the moon, fixing its orbit and ending the eclipse. With the permanent eclipse over, Dormammu's link to the physical world is broken. He's subjected to light, cursing Spider-Woman as he departs.

Again, Doctor Strange attempted something like this in his film, where he attempted to defend the Sanctums from Kaeillicius's attacks. However, when the Sanctums were all broken, Dormammu could cross the now open bridge to Earth. That link was far more substantial and harder to reverse than the one Dormammu utilized in Spider-Woman. It is unlikely moving the moon would have done much good against Dormammu on his home turf.

Still, Spider-Woman managed to beat Dormammu with only a satellite, her quick thinking, and turning Dormammu's incredible cosmic power against him. She didn't need a Time Stone to do that.
