Critics and fans have been fawning over Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse since its release earlier this month. However, Sony's animated approach to a Spider-Man film differs radically from the live-action films that the studio has previously worked on.

Naturally, there's going to be a lot of differences between an animated film and a live-action one, but Into the Spider-Verse's take on the mythos brings a whole lot of new things to the table. For example, the animated film introduces new characters that have never appeared in a live-action movie, including Spider-Ham, Spider-Man Noir, Peni Parker and many, many more.

Into the Spider-Verse also focuses heavily on Miles Morales, who was first introduced in Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli's Ultimate Fallout #4. A younger, less-experienced version of the character, Miles is immensely popular with a lot of fans, and Into the Spider-Verse has finally brought that hero to the big-screen.

The movie also offers a take on Peter Parker that hasn't yet appeared in the live-action films. Instead of focusing solely on a young Peter, the animated film uses an older, more world-weary version of the character in Peter B. Parker, who takes on a mentor role for the much younger Miles.

Into the Spider-Verse brings something fresh in its take on what a Spider-Man film can be. Check out the video below to find out just how much the animated film differs from the MCU's current take on the character, as portrayed by Tom Holland.

The expectations surrounding the film were much more modest, and in its first weekend, Into the Spider-Verse has already earned over $68 million, setting a new record for a December debut by an animated feature.

Sony plans to expand the animated franchise with the studio already planning a sequel and a spinoff headlined by Gwen Stacy, featuring Cindy Moon/Silk and Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman. Producers Amy Pascal and Avi Arad have also acknowledged the potential for a spinoff focused on Spider-Ham.
