Sony Pictures Animation's hit 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse shocked audiences when it revealed that the seemingly unassuming scientist working with Wilson Fisk was actually none other that Olivia "Liv" Octavius, the film's new version of classic Spider-Man villain Doctor Octopus.

Into the Spider-Verse co-director Rodney Rothman has now hinted that fans haven't seen the last of Liv (who is voiced by Kathryn Hahn), teasing a bigger, puppet master-esque role for this new take on Doc Ock as the franchise carries forward.

"In the end, we found the movie played fine without us tagging every single possible thing," Rothman told Total Film. "But we definitely think of Liv as someone who is not gone from the story, and who in many ways, is our most powerful bad guy. She's manipulating a lot of things to achieve her own grand ambitions."

Of course, the idea of Doctor Octopus as Spidey's big bad, or something to that effect, is hardly unheard of. After all, Alfred Molina's Otto Octavius served as the main antagonist in the beloved 2004 film Spider-Man 2. Moreover, Doc Ock had a similar role in the acclaimed 2018 Spider-Man video game.

That being said, from the sound of things, a follow-up to Into the Spider-Verse is still a ways away. As such, Liv's future, as well as the future of all the other characters, is likely still being worked out. Still, it should be interesting to see what the future holds for the big screen's new Doc Ock and exactly how big a part she will play as Sony continues to expand its Spider-Man franchise.

Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse stars Shameik Moore, Brian Tyree Henry, Jake Johnson, Mahershala Ali, Hailee Steinfeld, Liev Schreiber, Luna Lauren Velez, Lily Tomlin, Nicolas Cage, John Mulaney and Kimiko Glenn. The film is available on digital HD, UltraHD, 4K, Blu-ray and DVD.
