With an infinite number of Earths, each with its own Spider-Man or Spider-Woman, it can be hard to keep track of them all. But some alternate web slingers stick out more than others. But in this scenario, it's not just because he's got a radical version of the classic Spider-man costume, it's also because he's a punk rock god.

On Earth-138, big business had managed to take over government affairs, becoming akin to Earth in the year 2099, but hope, or rather, rebellion, would rise in the form of Hobie Brown, this Earth's version of Spider-Man, who may be more familiar to fans by his unofficial title: Spider-Punk, an informal title that he hates.

Debuting in Amazing Spider-Man #10 by Dan Slott, Olivier Coipel, and Chris Eliopoulos, Hobart Brown, or Hobie as he prefers to be called, was an angry teenager living in New York during the presidential term of Ozzy Osborn. After being bitten by a spider irradiated by illegal chemical dumping, Hobie was imbued with powers of his own and vowed to fight alongside his friends and followers against the fascist government that had taken control of the country. Spider-Punk then began using not just his powers to affect change, but also his music.

Forming a large group of followers that dubbed themselves the "Spider Army" Hobie began leading a rebellion against President Osborn and his regime. Rallying the lower classes of the country that Osborn was trying to destroy, Hobie took the fight to Osborn, who sent his own forces, the Thunderbolt Department, after the Spider Army. Even armed with superior tech, Hobie managed to pull off an impossible win by unleashing 15000 volts from a punk rock tune backed up by an army of amps. Hobie then, very appropriately, killed Osborn by smashing the president's head with his guitar.

Hobie was later chosen by the Superior Spider-Man to join the team built up from the Spider-Verse to defeat the Inheritors, a vampiric group that was killing Spider-Men across the multiverse. In Otto's mind, Hobie was perfect for the job because he was "unpredictable" his completely unorthodox way of handling any situation giving him a unique edge against the inheritors. And he was right, Hobie comes from a world where the powerless were constantly oppressed. He quite literally had to live off of hope and the idea that everyone has the power to stand up to evil, no matter how impossible it seemed. In the face of a vampiric family that drained the life energy from countless Spider totems, that kind of grit was invaluable.

Hobie would prove his worth when he was given the critical mission of saving an alternate version of Aunt May. In that universe, May had been the one gifted with spider powers, adorably going by the name "Spider-Ma'am" But she would have been helpless against the Inheritor, Karn, who had just been rejected by his family. Karn was the exact opposite of Hobie, he believed in a system, not the same one that Hobie fought and defeated, but a system of fate that could not be escaped.

This is where Hobie's boundless hope came in. While Karn was blathering on and on about how he could not escape his fate as a monster, Hobie rammed him with the spikes on his mask. To Hobie, being helpless is only an illusion the system makes up to fool its victims into thinking there is no hope. His words and actions bought his team the precious moments they needed to sway Karn to their side, gaining a critical ally in the fight against the Inheritors and leading to their defeat. Hobie would resurface during the next Spider-Verse crisis, teaming up with Miles Morales to take down his version of the Church of Universal Truth.
