The cover of Spider-Punk #5 gives fans a new look at Robbie Banner's Hulk and a terrific new Venom variant.
Written by Cody Ziglar and illustrated by Justin Mason, Spider-Punk #5 is the last issue in the Spider-Punk miniseries, which follows the rebellious Hobie Brown as the anarchic Spider-Punk -- a "rockerboy" Spider-Man variant of EARTH-138. Its cover, by Takashi Okazaki, hints at it being an explosive finale.
As Spider-Punk, Brown uses might and music to battle the oppressive villains of New York City, leading his own Spider-band comprised of other Marvel hero variants, including Karl Morningdew/Captain Anarchy, Riri Williams/RiotHeart, Robbie Banner/Hulk, Kamala Khan, and a female Daredevil. The characters are outfitted with punk rock designs, and their personalities reflect the comic series' more dystopian and cynical setting.
Spider-Punk was originally the creation of writer Dan Slott and artist Olivier Coipel. Marvel first introduced the character in The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 3 #10 (2015) during the Spider-Verse storyline. Hobie Brown, whose 616 counterpart is the Prowler, was a homeless teenager transformed by an irradiated spider due to President Norman Osborn's toxic waste dumping. He gains spider-like abilities and becomes the punk rock-inspired Spider-Man. With axe and attitude, it's his mission to free the oppressed people of New York from Osborn's V.E.N.O.M. troops. Eventually, Superior Spider-Man --Otto Octavius' mind in Peter Parker's body -- recruits Brown to join his army of Spider-Men.
Fans can read the first two issues of Spider-Punk now while waiting for Issue #3 to drop on July 13. The upcoming story will feature the Spider-Band traveling through Philly as they help their Earth's version of Daredevil (real name unknown) battle the Kingpin. The series has already shown Spider-Punk fighting off threats like a Misfits version of Kraven and the Hunters and Taskmaster -- who is not that different from his 616 counterpart.
