Spider-Man’s Rhys Ifans Won’t Be Charged In Comic-Con Incident

The Amazing Spider-Man star Rhys Ifans won’t be charged in a confrontation with security last month at Comic-Con International, TheWrap reports.

The actor, who plays Dr. Curt Connors in Sony’s upcoming franchise reboot, was cited and released July 22 on suspicion of misdemeanor battery after he allegedly shoved a guard before the movie’s panel. Conflicting reports at the time stated that Ifans, whom police said smelled of alcohol, became irate either because a member of his entourage wasn’t permitted into Hall H or because the actor wanted to smoke backstage.

A spokeswoman for the San Diego Office of the City Attorney told TheWrap that Ifans won’t be charged because, “After reviewing differing witness accounts, our prosecutors concluded there was not sufficient evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.”

Sony at the time downplayed the “minor” confrontation, but said that Ifans “deeply regrets this incident.”

Directed by Marc Webb, The Amazing Spider-Man also stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Irrfan Khan, Denis Leary, Chris Zylka, Campbell Scott, C. Thomas Howell, Julianne Nicholson and Annie Parisse. It opens July 3, 2012.
