Spider-Man fights crime thanks to the proportionate strength and speed of an irradiated spider and his own various gadgets that he has created over the years, like the mechanical web-shooters or spider-tracers that he created when he was only a teenager.

Of course, some of Spider-Man's most powerful villains also have their own collection of gadgets that they use to commit crimes or take out the wall-crawler. So today we are going to take a look at a few dangerous tools used by his villains to see which is the most powerful weapon Spider-Man has had to overcome over the years.

10 HALLUCINOGENIC GAS

Spider-Man has had to deal with many different versions of dangerous and poisonous gases from his various villains over the years, but the hallucinogenic gas that caused him the most problems was originally created by the Green Goblin, though it's been used and perfected by Hobgoblin and Mysterio.

This gas not only caused Spider-Man to hallucinate, but it also managed to block his Spider-Sense, which is what he would normally rely on when faced with Mysterio's special effects. This gas left Spider-Man without one of the most useful powers in his fight against crime and forced him to learn new ways to fight.

9 GODSTONE

John Jameson, Jr. is the son of good ol' JJJ, though he never willingly reached the levels of villainy as his father did in his earliest appearances. In fact, John Jameson was a heroic astronaut and occasional ally of Spider-Man, until he found the Godstone on the moon during one of his missions with NASA.

The Godstone would transform John into the lycanthropic Man-Wolf and made him a ferocious villain of Spider-Man despite the friendship between the two. Thankfully John would eventually gain some control over the Godstone so he could use the Man-Wolf as a force for good working with teams like FBI's Symbiote Task Force and Black Panther's Agents of Wakanda.

8 ANTI-GRAV HARNESS

Spider-Man battles the Vulture

One of the very first villains Spider-Man ever faced was Adrian Toomes/Vulture, who managed to rule the skies while fighting Spider-Man thanks to his creation of an electromagnetic anti-gravity harness that, when combined with his wingsuit, gave Vulture the ability to fly and launched him on his villainous path.

Not only has the anti-grav harness permanently enhanced Adrian Toomes' strength and agility, but it has been worn by a few different criminals over the years which proves it's effective deadliness. Toomes has had the harness and his costume improved a few times over the years, with one version even allowing him to drain the life-force of others to make himself younger.

7 SCORPION TAIL

Mac Gargan has worn a few different supervillain costumes over the years, but he got his start as the genetically and mechanically enhanced villain known as the Scorpion, whose creation was actually financed by J. Jonah Jameson in his early war against Spider-Man.

While Mac's strength and abilities were due to the combination of his genes with scorpion DNA thanks to Dr. Farley Stillwell, his costume features a mechanical Scorpion tail that has had many dangerous upgrades over the years. The tail is quick, powerful, and has a deadly reach that ups the threat level of Scorpion immensely.

6 SPIDER-SLAYERS

Alistair Smythe leaps into action in Spider-Man comics

J.Jonah Jameson was behind the creation of another weapon to take out Spider-Man when he employed the services of Spencer Smythe to create the first Spider-Slayer robot that he piloted himself, which led to many different versions that were deadlier than the last.

While the robotic Spider-Slayers have taken many forms over the years, the Ultimate Spider-Slayer was less of a mechanical weapon and more of a genetic experiment, as Spencer's son Alistair encased himself in a bio-mechanical armor to turn himself into his father's ultimate killing machine.

5 CARRION VIRUS

There have been quite a few different strains of the Carrion virus created over the years, but all hail from the work of Dr. Miles Warren/Jackal, who created the virus while working with the powerful geneticist known as the High Evolutionary to help his creations look more human, though it actually resulted in the decay of those it infected and turned them into zombie-like monsters.

This virus would be modified and used a few different times over the years with the goal of erasing humanity to replace them with clones, but it has also created a few versions of the villain known as Carrion, who is able to decay organic material with just a touch and even alter his density to float on the wind and phase through walls.

4 VIBRO-SHOCK GAUNTLETS

Homecoming-Shocker

Herman Shultz was a two-bit thief who was caught when the nitro he used to blow a safe attracted the attention of security guards, which led him to create his vibro-shock gauntlets to first break out of prison and then to become the criminal known as Shocker.

Shocker's vibro-shock gauntlets are able to shoot blasts of vibrated air, however, the gauntlets are so powerful that he has to wear a specially-insulated costume to avoid the feedback. Shocker may be a bit of a joke to the superhuman community, but his vibro-shock gauntlets are no laughing matter.

3 MECHANICAL TENTACLES

Doctor Octopus with his arms

Dr. Otto Octavius first created the mechanical arms he wore as Doctor Octopus to handle dangerous radioactive elements from a safe position, but a tragic accident fused the arms to Octavious' body and also caused irreparable brain damage that created a psychic connection between Octavius and his tentacles.

Doc Ock's tentacles are incredibly strong and we're at one point created using adamantium, making them nearly unbreakable as well. The arms have been updated over the years to include various devices and weapons within the arms, though even without the additional firearm they have given Spider-Man a run for his money on many occasions.

2 GOBLIN GEAR

Norman Osborn was the first character to use the name Green Goblin after he created a performance-enhancing compound that became known as the Goblin Formula. Unfortunately, the formula was flawed, so while it enhanced his physical abilities it also drove him completely insane.

However, Osborn's brilliant inventive mind was unaffected, and he was able to create an arsenal of Goblin-themed weaponry including his Goblin Glider, explosive and gas Pumpkin Bombs, Razor-Bats, electro-gauntlets and more that he has stored in caches across New York City and the world that are often used to equip other villains like Hobgoblin.

1 SYMBIOTES

Absolute Carnage Spider-Man Marvel Comics

While not technically a weapon, the symbiotes that have been both ally and foe to Spider-Man are easily the most dangerous thing he has ever faced. While he first wore the symbiote as his own costume, it would later join with Eddie Brock to become the incredibly powerful Venom.

The Venom symbiote would reproduce and bond with Cletus Kasady to create the Carnage symbiote, which is able to create all kinds of bladed weapons, camouflage itself and its host, rapidly heal and in some cases bring its host back from near death. There are many more symbiotes like Toxin and Scream with these abilities, and they are all incredibly dangerous.
