Sony-Marvel's latest Spider-Man spinoff film, Madame Web, has begun filming in Boston.

According to the latest update provided by Production Weekly, the filming of Madame Web's Boston unit began on July 11 and will continue into September. The entire filming for the new Spider-Man spinoff movie is set to take place from July to October in three different geographical locations, including Boston, New York and Mexico. Lorenzo di Bonaventura (G.I. Joe and Transformers movie series) of Di Bonaventura Pictures, Erik Howsam (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Snake Eyes), Marvel Studio boss Kevin Feige and Sony's Executive Vice President Palak Patel will be the producers of Madame Web.

Morbius writer Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless join writer-director Kerem Sanga (First Girl I Loved, The Young Kieslowski) as head writers for the new Spider-Man spinoff. The confirmed cast includes Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) as Madame Web, Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria), Celeste O'Connor (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), Isabela Merced (Transformers: The Last Knight) and Tahar Rahim (The Mauritanian). Jessica Jones and The Defenders director S.J. Clarkson will occupy the big chair for the new film.

The film's title references the Marvel Comics character Cassandra Webb, a blind woman with profound telepathic abilities. According to the film's synopsis, Webb suffered from a lifetime of blindness and many years of neurological deterioration from myasthenia gravis. However, her psychic abilities led her to discover Peter Parker's true identity when Spider-Man rescued one of her students who was kidnaped during a scam at the Daily Globe newspaper. While Johnson has been cast in the lead role, it has not been confirmed if she will portray Cassandra or her much-younger successor as Madame Web, former Spider-Woman Julia Carpenter.

In the comics, Madame Web would also help Spider-Man prevent an assassination attempt against a political candidate. Later, Black Tom Cassidy sent the Juggernaut to kidnap Web for her powers. She foresaw the attack and called Spider-Man for help. However, he could not stop the Juggernaut, who unknowingly removed Web from her vital life-supporting chair, leaving her in severe shock.

Madame Web is part of Sony's Spider-Man Universe, which exists in conjunction with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony's Spiderverse includes feature films such as Venom, Morbius and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter. Except for the recent Tom Holland version of the Spider-Man Trilogy, which was a collaboration between Sony and Marvel Studios, all featured films mentioned above are handled exclusively by Sony.

The mysterious movie recently added American Horror Stories star Emma Roberts to its cast. However, her role, among many others, is currently undisclosed. Madame Web is also rumored to cover an entirely different film set in the Spider-Verse.

Madame Web is slated for release on July 7, 2023.
