While news of a Jackpot movie as part of Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters is relatively new, the latest reports suggest Arrowverse boss Marc Guggenheim has been working on the Spider-Man spinoff for two years.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, Guggenheim explained, "It's a little deceptive, I've been working on Jackpot for two years now." The idea of a Jackpot movie first started doing the rounds in 2018, and now, the site claims Sony has never stopped working on bringing the character to life on the silver screen. Apart from the news that he's secretly been working on Jackpot, Guggenheim didn't reveal any further details about what fans can expect.

Jackpot was originally introduced in 2007 as part of Marvel Comics' "Brand New Day" initiative. She was conceived of as something of a joke, based on Mary Jane Watson's iconic line of, "Face it, Tiger, you hit the jackpot." The heroic Jackpot was actually Sara Ehret, a scientist working for an OsCorp subsidiary. Ehret isn't the only character to wear the mantle of Jackpot, but it's currently unclear whether Guggenheim's script will feature Ehret, Alana Jobson or both women.

Aside from the Tom Holland-led Spider-Man movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony has been working on its own villain-centric standalone films, including both Venom movies, the upcoming Morbius and news of a Kraven the Hunter feature. There's also a Madame Web movie in the works, Amy Pascal's promise of a Silk film and Silver & Black, which is currently on an indefinite hiatus.

There's been plenty of tragedy in Jackpot's relatively short existence in the comics, which fits with the darker tone of Venom and Morbius. Although neither Jackpot has been a villain, Guggenheim could easily reimagine the character. Guggenheim's credits on Green Lantern and as the overseer of the Arrowverse's recent "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover means he's got plenty of experience with comic book characters.

Where Jackpot will fit in with the rest of Sony's plans for Spider-Man spinoffs remains to be seen. Although there are rumors Sony is working toward a Sinister Six movie, it's clear all Spidey movies are interconnected. The first Morbius trailer left fans confused thanks to the return of Michael Keaton as Vulture, also suggesting the spinoffs are part of the MCU. With some 900 Spider-Man characters at Sony's disposal, Jackpot joins a growing list of obscure names that are set to have their own place in the SPUMC.
