Even though we enjoy our snappy comeback friend we do need to be reminded on occasion that with light there must also come dark. The signifying trait of Spider-Man is that he is a quippy funny loudmouth so we do forget that his stories can also go a tad on the dark side.

Fan of spiders? If not then Spider-Island would probably be a nightmare. The Jackal returns to turn all of the residents of Manhatten into mutated giant spiders. Spidey has to team up with a lot of New York City-based heroes to fight off the Jackal and his mysterious new partner the Spider Queen.

This story can give anyone with arachnophobia the chills. An entire city of giant mutant spiders? Gross. Although if you're scared of spiders then reading Spider-Man in general might be an offputting experience.

6 Kraven's Last Hunt

Kraven's Last Hunt

Kraven became obsessed with Spider-Man and knew that he had to hunt him down to prove that he is superior to him in every way. After a cat and mouse game, he shoots Spidey and buries him in a grave. He then assumes the Spider-Man identity and begins to hunt down criminals proving he is better at it than Spidey was.

After two weeks Peter Parker wakes in his grave and claws his way out. Kraven never intended to kill him. When they confront each other Kraven releases one of the foes he captured while Peter was out. Spidey almost loses to him but Kraven stops him. Last we see Kraven is satisfied and with nothing left to live for takes his own life.

5 Marvel Zombies/Army Of Darkness

During the popularity of both Marvel Zombies and the Army Of Darkness comics, they were brought together to do a crossover. Ash ends up in the Marvel Zombie Universe after getting kicked out of heaven. He immediately starts encountering lots of superhero zombies.

During this story arc, we actually see Spider-Man first get infected. He quickly returns home to warn MJ and Aunt May about the zombie plague. However, his infection takes him over and he ends up eating Mary Jane. The great artwork by Fabiano Neves lends so much to this series that it's just gruesome to look at.

4 Shed

spider-man the lizard

The Lizard seems perfect for Halloween reading as he fits into the giant monster mold that works so well in Spider-Man. After working so hard to suppress his Lizard side Curt Connors finally ends up losing his battle. As he loses his humanity more and more a new version of the Lizard appears which is smarter and deadlier than ever before.

During the story, Curt Connor's son Billy is cornered by The Lizard and ultimately gets eaten by him. This leads The Lizard to shed his skin and be reborn anew with a new form and higher intelligence which also allows him to psychically connect to the lizard part of people's brains. It's a terrifying new look at an old Spider-Man foe.

3 Absolute Carnage

Carnage is back and he is the most ruthless he has ever been. After bonding to a new symbiote Cletus Kasady begins to hunt down everyone that has ever been bonded to a symbiote to absorb the codices that have been left in their bodies. 2 I Walked With A Spider

During the Spider-Verse event, we were treated to numerous alternate versions of Spider-Man from the many realities that we were shown through the Web of Life And Destiny. We are introduced to Patton Parnel who likes to fry ants with a magnifying glass and is in general just a horrible person. After breaking into a lab he is bitten by a radioactive spider.

He learns quickly that he has spider-powers but also starts to get a hunger for animals and even some of his classmates. The story goes on about Patton attacking his school bully, his abusive uncle, and even biting the girl he has a crush on laying spider eggs in her neck. Gross.

1 Father's Day

Venom Flash Thompson Web swinging Through City

In Venom Vol. 2 issue 22 we follow the Flash Thompson version of Venom as he is going through the city on the trail of Jack O' Lantern. Jack has been killing people and leaving them hollowed out with a candle inside just like his namesake. Once Flash tracks Jack to the sewer he enters to find his father's corpse with a candle illuminating his head. Flash is taunted by his foe before the reveal that the place is set with a bomb. Flash's interactions with Jack and his flashbacks to his family struggles bring this story to a grim and heartbreaking end while still being creepy.
