Marvel’s Spider-Man Ousts Arkham City as Best-Selling Superhero Game in US

Marvel's Spider-Man for the Playstation 4 has surpassed Batman: Arkham City as the highest-selling superhero video game in the United States.

Video game industry analyst Mat Piscatella of The NPD Group took to Twitter to share a chart from the organization listing the top 10 superhero video games in terms of lifetime dollar sales in the U.S. At the top of the chart is Insomniac's Spider-Man, meaning it has leapfrogged Arkham City to become the best-selling superhero game stateside.

Arkham City first launched in 2011 for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 to great success, selling 2 million of its 4.6 million shipped units in its first week of release. The title has since been re-release numerous times, including a Game of the Year edition, Wii U and OS X versions, as well as remastered versions for the PS4 and Xbox One.

Spider-Man was released exclusively for the PS4 in September of last year, selling 3.3 million units (including bundles containing the game and the PS4 console) in only three days to become the fastest-selling first-party game in Sony's history. This early success would evidently put the game on track to becoming the most lucrative superhero game in the entire domestic market.

When it comes to superhero video games in the U.S., Spider-Man and Batman have apparently been dominating the scene for some time. In addition to Spider-Man coming in at first place and Arkham City at second, Batman: Arkham Knight and LEGO Batman come in at third and fourth place, respectively. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: The Movie and Spider-Man: The Movie 2 are currently sitting at sixth and seventh place, respectively, followed once again by Batman: Arkham Asylum in ninth place. Other games on the top 10 list include LEGO Marvel Super Heroes in fifth place, Injustice: Gods Among Us in eighth place and Injustice 2 in tenth place.

Developed by Insomniac Games, Marvel's Spider-Man is available now on PlayStation 4.
