Since Spider-Man's one of the most iconic heroes in Marvel Comics, most people are familiar with his powers. The Wall Crawler's basic abilities have been displayed in comic books, animated series, video games, and live-action movies for decades now. However, there are some powers Spider-Man may not be aware of.

Spider-Man uses skills like sticking to walls and using his spider-sense on a regular basis, but abilities like his stingers rarely appear in comics. Some powers correspond to specific Marvel events and disappear not long after. Other versions of Spider-Man, be they clones or from alternate realities, show off impressive powers Peter Parker has yet to tap into.

Updated on June 2nd, 2023 by Casey Coates: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has officially hit theaters, making it the perfect time to explore Spider-Man's lesser known powers. Miles Morales has his signature camouflaging technique, but he's not the only one with special tricks up his sleeve. Even his mentor Peter Parker has some surprise skills he keeps in his back pocket.

10 Ability To Spit Acid

Man-Spider

The Man-Spider is a devolved version of Peter Parker, triggered first by a trip to the Savage Land. Much later, Spidey fought against the Queen, who could control insects. She also reverted Peter back to his spider-form.

In Spider-Man: The Animated Series from the '90s, the Man-Spider could spit acid and had enhanced strength. These latent abilities theoretically remain dormant in Peter Parker until activated. Across the spider-verse, some versions of Peter Parker never reverted to normal, remaining Man-Spider for good.

9 Healing Factor

Spider-Man suffers great injuries in Marvel Comics

Marvel characters like Wolverine are known for their healing factor, but many fans would be surprised to learn Spider-Man has one as well. Spider-Man generally gets into brawls with supervillains far more powerful than he is. As a result, he often walks away with some serious bruises.

Even when Spider-Man's strength and stamina don't protect him from severe injury, Peter quickly bounces back thanks to his healing factor. It's not nearly as strong as Wolverine's, but it's there and it's saved Peter's life more than once.

8 Sticky Fingers That Burn Enemies

Kaine Parker

Peter Parker isn't the only Spider-Man in the Marvel Universe. One person to take the name is Kaine Parker, an evil clone of Peter's and one of the many characters introduced in the infamous Clone Saga. Kaine had all of Peter's basic abilities, such as his sticky fingers that let him crawl up walls.

Kaine Parker took Spider-Man's wall-crawling ability to the next level. Kaine used his fingers' stickiness to burn, scar, and maim his enemies. In some cases, he even tore their skin off. Later, Peter Parker would realize he had this terrifying potential as well.

7 Retractable Stingers

Spider-Man prepares to battle with his stingers.

"The Other" storyline introduced a few new powers for Spider-Man. One of them was stingers. As Peter noted in the comics, stingers aren't really a thing with spiders. Regardless, he developed a pair of dagger-like stingers that projected from each of his arms — similar to Spider-Man 2099's powerful claws.

Peter Parker's stingers first came about during a major battle with the villain Morlun, who had attacked Mary Jane. Peter's anger and fear triggered the stingers, which haven't stayed a permanent ability. Instead, the stinger ability faded as though it had never happened.

6 Night-Vision

Another significant ability that Spider-Man developed during "The Other" storyline was night-vision. His vision had always been enhanced since first gaining powers, meaning he no longer needed to wear glasses. However, Peter soon pushed his enhanced vision even further.

Spider-Man eventually developed a keen ability to see at night, not unlike the night vision effect associated with military goggles and weapons. Peter learned of this newfound power during a time when it seemed the spider-bite was less random lab accident and more a mystical providence.

5 Can Travel Between Multiple Realities

One of the most interesting pieces of Spider-Man lore concerns the Spider-Verse, and the various versions of Spider-Man within it. Radically affecting the comics, this concept has appeared in video games like Spider-Man: Edge of Time, several animated cartoons, and even the MCU film Spider-Man: No Way Home.

In the comics, fans learned Peter Parker and all the Spider-heroes in the Spider-Verse are connected via The Web of Life, an interdimensional force that allows them to travel between realities. This concept heavily influenced the hit movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and gets further explored in the exciting sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

4 Ability To Talk To & Control Spiders

Following Marvel storyline, "The Other," Peter Parker also developed an ability to talk to spiders. This put Spider-Man on par a bit with Ant-Man, whose connection to ants is a major part of his character in the comics and movies.

For Spider-Man, this was a big change, but not one that gained a strong foothold in the comics. When The Queen tried to destroy New York City by unleashing a horde of spiders on it, Spider-Man was able to talk them out of it by communicating with them directly. Since then, this ability rarely gets referenced.

3 Camouflage

Miles Morales

Miles Morales turns invisible in Spider-Man comics.

Miles Morales became the Spider-Man of Earth-1610 from Marvel's Ultimate Comics universe. Distinguishing himself from Peter Parker, Miles can blend in with his surroundings — like how spiders will adapt their colors and markings to blend into their environment.

Miles Morales quickly became a major part of the main Marvel universe and the movies as well. Brooklyn's Spider-Man got to put his unique power on display during Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and the hit PlayStation game Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

2 Future-Predicting Spider-Sense

Spider-Man's spider-sense goes off in Marvel Comics

Spider-Man's signature spider-sense has become one of his most iconic abilities. His skill for sensing danger gets Peter Parker out of a lot of jams when battling deadly supervillains. In recent years, Peter discovered this sixth sense is actually more extensive than he first realized.

On a few occasions, Spider-Man has actually seen into the future. However, he doesn't have any control over this ability. Interestingly, Peter's clone Kaine Parker appears to have more experience with this, and his visions are often more profound.

1 Super-Speed

Spider-Man is agile and quick, far beyond any athlete, but he eventually reached a speed he previously thought impossible. He'll never win a race against The Flash from DC Comics, but Peter Parker does have super-speed.

Spider-Man uses enhanced speed to some degree during most battles, constantly zipping about much to his opponent's frustration. At one point, Spider-Man focused his speed and his spider-sense and discovered he could catch a bullet. He rarely exhibited speed on that level afterwards, but it made his quick reflexes no less impressive.
