WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Spider-Man Noir #5 by Margaret Stohl, Juan Ferreyra, and VC's Travis Lanham, on sale now.

Spider-Man Noir was just confronted by the dead versions of some of his most famous villains and fell into the Underworld itself. After using the Cicada Stone to unlock the M'Kraan Crystal, one of Spider-Man's companions revealed herself to be an evil goddess named Inanna. Inanna was using Spider-Man to find the crystal so she could unlock a portal into the underworld. She resurrected Spidey's enemies, transformed Electro into a horrible electrified monster, and even transformed Spider-Man into a creepy Spider-creature.

This world's Spidey is getting beat down by a deranged version of the Sinister Six which includes Electro, Goblin, Chameleon and Sandman. Each member gets their licks in during the squabble. Electro finishes the fight by throwing Spider-Man into the Underworld where Inanna assumes Spider-Man will meet his doom. However, Spider-Man didn't die; he transcended reality and discovered this entire adventure has been part of a greater plan to keep balance in the Spider-Verse.

This Spider-Man didn't meet his end when he was in the Underworld, either. Instead, he had a discussion with his Uncle Ben, a goddess, and a Spider-God. While in the Underworld, Inanna's sister Ereshkigal reveals herself to be Holly Babson, the murdered dame Spider-Man was investigating when he got into this debacle. She tells Spidey Inanna was banished from the Underworld and has been searching for a way back in ever since, which is why she murdered Holly and took the Cicada Stone, and find the M'Kraan Crystal.

Soon after meeting Holly, she reveals her true form as a giant magical spider and shows Peter that's he's been a little cog in a grand wheel this entire time. Spider-Man was deemed a Spider-Totem to destroy the M'Kraan Crystal before the Nazis or any other country on the verge of a World War found the crystal and possibly destroyed the world. "There is no Big Apple without the Big Marble, no world without a universe," Ereshkigal says. Spider-Totems play key roles in maintaining the Web of Life and Destiny, the ethereal string of events that connects everyone in the Spider-Verse.  After Ereshkigal reveals to Spider-Man that he's been used as a Spider-Totem to destroy the M'Kraan Crystal and save the entire Spider-Verse, he shoots out of the Underworld, snatches the Cicada Stone, and destroys it. Destroying the Cicada Stone made the M'Kraan Crystal explode in a fiery hail that kills Inanna in the process.

The Spider-Verse is connected by The Web of Life and Destiny and Spider-Men and women across the Spider-Verse are regularly used as Totems to keep harmony. Back in the city, Huma Bergman has gone down as a hero, despite actually being an evil Goddess of the Underworld.

The only evidence of Spider-Man's interference in the Temple of Inanna is on an artifact called the Warka Vase which is stashed in a museum in Midtown Manhattan. While the world may not know Spider-Man saved the entire Spider-Verse again, the Spider-Verse knows, and that'll have to be good enough.
