Spider-Man: No Way Home co-writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers admitted in a new interview they have no idea what is next for the Spider-Man franchise.

"This is one where we don't have to say that we're not allowed to say because we truly don't know," Sommers told FandomWire in a conversation posted on YouTube. "To my knowledge, I'm not aware of any future projects in the works. That doesn't mean they don't exist, but that's nothing that you know anyone has talked to Chris and I about. I certainly hope so. I love Tom [Holland] as Spider-Man. I hope there's more, and I would love nothing more than to be involved. But at this point, we don't know."

Meanwhile, McKenna joked that he hung out with Holland at the No Way Home premiere afterparty and was sworn to secrecy about any upcoming Spider-Man projects, teasing, "So he told me a lot about it, but I just cannot let you know. I'm so sorry...I've been told by Tom, 'Please don't let Erik Sommers know.'"

Sommers and McKenna's comments come shortly after No Way Home producer Amy Pascal recently confirmed Disney and Sony are "actively" developing a future Spider-Man project. "We're producers, so we always believe everything will work out. I love working with [Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige]," Pascal explained. "We have a great partnership, along with Tom Rothman, who runs Sony and has been instrumental, a great leader with great ideas. I hope it lasts forever."

Feige also added, "Amy and I and Disney and Sony are talking about -- yes, we're actively beginning to develop where the story heads next, which I only say outright because I don't want fans to go through any separation trauma like what happened after Far From Home. That will not be occurring this time."

To date, Holland has portrayed Peter Parker/Spider-Man in three standalone films for Sony with Marvel Studios co-producing -- including No Way Home -- and three that were strictly for Marvel Studios: Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

While the actor's involvement in future Spider-Man projects is largely unknown, it's been revealed he will show up in at least one more project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the No Way Home premiere, Sony CEO Tom Rothman explained, "We lend one, and they lend one, and that's how Benedict [Cumberbatch] is in this movie. So we have one more 'lend back' that's committed."

As Spider-Man: No Way Home dominates the global box office, it comes as no surprise that fans and producers are turning their discussion to the future of Holland's web-slinger. No Way Home has recently surpassed Infinity War to claim the title of the second-highest box office for a domestic opening weekend ever, a massive achievement considering the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: No Way Home is in theaters now.
