Tom Holland's latest promotion for Spider-Man: No Way Home playfully referenced Spidey's first big-screen costume.

In Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, Peter Parker puts on a homemade costume to disguise himself while wrestling for a local promotion. In the years since Raimi's trilogy, the costume has been repurposed by the internet as a meme to describe enthusiastic (but underwhelming) fan-made costumes. Taking to his Instagram stories, Holland posted the image alongside text that joked about wearing the outfit when he sees No Way Home for himself.

The reference is just one of the many threads connecting No Way Home to Sony's Spider-Man and Amazing Spider-Man movies. No Way Home features the return of five villains from past films, including original Green Goblin actor Willem Dafoe. Holland, who grew up on the original Spider-Man movies, was impressed by Dafoe's performance, saying, "It was pretty incredible, and he's a wonderful guy, and he put me to shame."

Despite the presence of Spidey's classic villains, there have been no official announcements concerning Maguire or Andrew Garfield's involvement in No Way Home. None of the film's merchandise or trailers show the characters, though many fans speculate that the footage has been altered to mask their presence. Holland has leaned into the mystery behind his predecessors' futures, teasing both Maguire and Holland's appearances in the lead-up to No Way Home.

While its premiere is still weeks away, No Way Home is already on track to be a massive success. No Way Home's advanced ticket sales earned over $35 million on its first day, the second-largest pre-sale sum in film history. Additionally, Marvel and Sony have announced that they will be extending their partnership to make more projects together moving forward, with another Spider-Man trilogy possibly in the works. Though it is unclear if these films will see Holland sticking around for more adventures or passing the torch to Miles Morales, Spidey's big-screen future looks bright.

Costume or no-costume, fans can see Spider-Man: No Way Home when it swings into theaters on Dec. 17.
