WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home. Now playing in theaters.

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: No Way Home has broken a number of both pre- and post-pandemic records since it was released. Most recently, it topped Sony's highest-grossing films within the United States.

Over the Christmas weekend, Spider-Man: No Way Home grossed $405.5 million at the domestic box office, overtaking Sony's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which previously held the top spot with its $404.5 million domestic earnings.

Beyond the domestic box office, the latest instalment in Marvel Studios' Spider-Man trilogy is expected to soon cross the $1 billion mark in worldwide earnings-- the first theatrical release to do so in the pandemic era. For comparison, Black Widow, released both in theaters and through Disney+ Premier Access, grossed $379.6 million while Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which was released exclusively in theaters, earned $432.2 million worldwide.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is set in the immediate aftermath of Mysterio's final assault on Peter Parker in the mid-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home. The master of illusions revealed Spider-Man's secret identity to the world and Parker is forced to face the consequences-- not just for himself, but for the loved ones that surround him. In an attempt to keep them from being impacted, Peter turns to Doctor Strange for help. The Sorcerer Supreme attempts a spell, but something goes horribly wrong with it, seemingly tearing a hole through the Marvel Cinematic Universe and allowing the multiverse to pour in in the form of supervillains and superheroes from other worlds and franchises.

For the first time, three different franchises were united with iconic stars reprising their roles, some of which they last played over a decade ago. Returning from 2002's Spider-Man is actor Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin. From the 2004 sequel comes Alfred Molina as Doc Ock and, finally, Thomas Haden Church as Sandman from Spider-Man 3. Alongside them are Jamie Foxx returning as Electro from Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Rhys Ifans reprising the role of the Lizard from Amazing Spider-Man.

In addition, Spider-Man: No Way Home sees the return of actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as their respective iterations of the Web-Slinger. Garfield's return in particular has been so well-received that fans have begun to call for a sequel to the Amazing Spider-Man film series. While no plans have been officially announced concerning Garfield's Spider-Man, a new rumor suggests that there may be more in store for the actor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
