With less than a month to go until the movie hits theaters, a new Spider-Man: No Way Home poster appears to contain the clearest look yet at the redesigned Green Goblin costume Willem Dafoe will don in the film.
The poster, which was unveiled on the Sony Pictures Japan Twitter account, shows a hooded Norman Osborn hovering ominously in the background. The updated suit and glider represent a radical departure from the Goblin gear seen in Spider-Man (2002), adding purple to the color scheme and dropping the infamous Goblin helmet in favor of a hood and goggles. This more comic-accurate visage appears to be built on the foundations of the original armor, indicating Osborn may tinker with his Goblin equipment during the course of the film.
Dafoe made his debut as Osborn in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, serving as the main antagonist of the first installment before returning in a supporting role to haunt James Franco's Harry Osborn in Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007). A rebooted version of the character made a brief appearance in the opening act of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), portrayed by Chris Cooper. Unlike the source material, this iteration of Norman never became the Green Goblin, leaving Dane DeHaan's Harry as the sole inheritor of the villainous mantle.
It appears Green Goblin is not the only villain to receive a tech upgrade in No Way Home, with footage across the various trailers and TV spots indicating that Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus will assimilate the nanotechnology in Peter Parker's Iron Spider suit. Similarly, Jamie Foxx's Electro seems to have assumed a new form more in line with his Earth-616 incarnation from the comics, wielding yellow lightning as opposed to the blue energy from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. This greater control over his powers may or may not be a result of the Stark Industries arc reactor spotted on his chest.
With the villain roster of the film becoming clearer, rumors and speculation that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will reprise their respective roles as Spider-Man continue to run rampant. Garfield has grown weary of being asked about it, saying, "Listen, at this point, people just, like... I'm done. Like, we'll find out when the movie comes out and we'll either be very disappointed, or we'll be very happy, or like, someone will say, 'I told you so.' And the other person was a bit, 'I told you so.' We'll all find out."
Spider-Man: No Way Home, directed by Jon Watts, swings into theaters on Dec. 17.
