Unused storyboards from Spider-Man: No Way Home feature Tom Holland's otherwise friendly neighborhood web-slinger dealing out some vicious blows to Mysterio.
Storyboard artist Phil Langone, who has worked on several Marvel Studios projects, including No Way Home, shared the sequence on Instagram. The scene is an alternate version of Aunt May's death that occurs under an elevated train next to Midtown High, whereafter Peter unleashes his rage on Mysterio. "Part of the idea being explored was Spidey is one of the strongest superheroes, but he holds back because he doesn't want to kill anyone," Langone wrote about the scene. "But what would it sort of look like if Spidey went berserker mode. Kind of never finished, but was fun to play with."
Quentin Beck/Mysterio made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home. Played by Jake Gyllenhaal, this onscreen version of Marvel's Master of Illusion is a disgruntled former Stark Industries employee who becomes disillusioned with Tony Stark, who he blames for stealing credit for the creation of his holographic technology. Beck appears to die at the end of Far From Home, but not before revealing Peter's super-powered alter ego to the world and framing him for murder. Many fans believe Beck is still alive, and these storyboards seem to confirm that theory, suggesting Marvel has plans for Gyllenhaal to return sometime in the future.
Mysterio's Vanishing Act
No Way Home is not the first Spider-Man movie from which Mysterio has been cut. In 2016, artist Jeffrey Henderson similarly shared storyboards from Sam Raimi's unmade Spider-Man 4, revealing that Bruce Campbell was to briefly appear as the character early in the film. "We were going to open the movie with this montage of all the villains we knew that Sam would never be able to use in Spider-Man movies," Henderson said. "We were going to try to do the Shocker, Mysterio, the Stilt Man, and that kind of stuff."
Following the success of No Way Home, fans have been petitioning for Raimi to make Spider-Man 4. Among those willing to return for a fourth entry in Raimi's Spider-Man series is J.K Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson. "Absolutely," he recently told Michael Rosenbaum on the latter's podcast Inside of You. "I would do anything that Sam Raimi approached me with. I mean, almost anything." Langone's unused scene from No Way Home also provides more information on Simmons' MCU version of Jameson, depicting the character as "a TMZ style street reporter."
While there has been no movement on Raimi's Spider-Man 4, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are currently developing Tom Holland's fourth big-screen adventure, though no release date has been set. In the meantime, fans can watch the actor's other Spider-Man outings -- Homecoming, Far From Home and No Way Home -- on Disney+.
