While Doctor Strange appears to be playing a major role in the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, some fans on social media have dissected the film's latest trailer and uncovered enough evidence to speculate as to whether the Sorcerer Supreme is actually in No Way Home at all.A number of fans on Twitter have shared screenshots that seem to suggest Doctor Strange is really the devilish Mephisto in disguise. The theory appears to stem from Strange's uncharacteristically reckless use of magic, with images of him winking at the camera as well as a sign reading "devil in disguise" seemingly supporting the fan theory.RELATED: Spider-Man: No Way Home Teaser Trailer's Biggest Moments & Questions

Other evidence to support the theory is Mephisto being teased in the WandaVision season finale, specifically when Pietro appears to reference the devilish villain upon saying the words "hell" and "devil" in a way fans took as suggestive. However, Mephisto's inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe seemed to be debunked when it turned out he wasn't the major villain of the show. That may not be the case now should this latest fan theory prove correct.

Comic readers will recognize Mephisto as the demon who rules the fiery extra dimension he calls Hell in order to take advantage of humanity's belief in and fear of absolute evil. Though Mephisto appears to resemble the devil, it is unknown whether that too is a means to exploit humanity's common conception of the legendary ruler of the underworld. Similar to the devil, however, Mephisto is served by lesser demons, as well as the astral forms of dead humans trapped in demonic bodies resembling their mortal forms. As such, Mephisto desires hordes of sentients to submit to his will, seeking to enslave both human and alien souls alike.

Other highlights from the No Way Home teaser trailer are the notable inclusion of Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus from Sam Rami's Spider-Man 2. Joining Molina's Doc Ock appears to be Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin, an equally curious inclusion considering both villains died at the end of Spider-Man 1 and 2, respectively. If that wasn't enough Rami-era Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker was also seemingly teased in recent comments made by No Way Home actor J.B. Smoove.

Directed by Jon Watts and starring Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zendaya, J.K. Simmons and Marisa Tomei, Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters Dec. 17.
