Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe spotted an Easter egg in Spider-Man: No Way Home that links back to the 2008 film Iron Man.

A post on Reddit shared a number of screenshots from No Way Home, including a scene with several newspaper clippings hung on the darkened wall behind reporter J. Jonah Jameson, played by J.K. Simmons. One of the clippings, on the upper right, has the headline, "Tony Stark Is Iron Man." This identity reveal came at the end of Iron Man, when Tony Stark announced his superhero status to the world at a press conference.

Another clipping boasts the headline, "Spider-Man Joins Avengers." This is a reference to Captain America: Civil War, released in 2016. One of the newspapers references a more recent film with, "Mysterio Douses Hydro-Man in Venice," a nod to the 2019 Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Far From Home.

While Easter eggs aren’t new to the MCU, this particular Iron Man reference is particularly timely in Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Peter is still mourning the loss of his mentor and hero. With every reference to Tony Stark, the audience is reminded of Peter’s expectations for living up to Iron Man, as well as his raw emotions still boiling under the surface even while additional stresses and trials from Spider-Man: No Way Home are heaped upon the young superhero.

Other Easter eggs are peppered throughout Spider-Man: No Way Home, ready to be caught by the discerning eye. For example, on one television news broadcast, the words, "Political turmoil continues in New Asgard…" Another scene shows the images of several historical and scientific figures on the wall behind Parker, including the recognizable faces of some scientific figures from past MCU films.

Some of these references in Spider-Man: No Way Home are hard to catch. Others, such as the massive reproduction of Captain America's shield on the Statue of Liberty, are obvious.

While the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home did not announce when Spider-Man would return, it did give viewers a sneak peek at the second Doctor Strange film, in which Doctor Strange will have to face the consequences of some of the events from Spider-Man: No Way Home. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be released on May 6, 2022.
