Concept art for Spider-Man: No Way Home reveals a more comics-accurate version of Dr. Curt Connors/Lizard (Rhys Ifans).On Twitter, Ian Joyner, who is the Visual Development Supervisor at Marvel Studios and has worked on such films as 2018's Black Panther and 2019's Avengers: Endgame, shared images of some rejected concepts for Lizard in No Way Home. While the first image showed just showed a close-up of Lizard's face and shoulders, the second gave the villain purple pants and lab coat while making him appear distinctly more beastly.
Based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, Lizard first appeared in 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man, which starred Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. In that movie, Lizard, who was played by Ifans, attempted to create a serum to regrow his lost arm. However, taking the concoction had the unintended side effect of turning him into a reptilian monster.
Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Connors first appeared in 1963's The Amazing Spider-Man #6. Overall, Lizard's origin story in the comics is similar to what happened in the Garfield-led film. Connors generally struggled with his Lizard persona, though he's often an ally to Spider-Man. As the Lizard, though, the character is one of Spider-Man's fiercest foes and has been a member of such evil teams as the Sinister Six.
Set after the events of 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home, No Way Home is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and sees Tom Holland's Peter enlisting the help of Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to re-hide his identity after it was exposed by Quentin Beck/Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). The spell goes wrong, and villains from the different Spider-Man franchises end up in the MCU, including the Lizard.
No Way Home, which was released late last year, has proven a massive success for Marvel Studios and Sony. At the box office, No Way Home earned more than $1.867 billion worldwide and became one of the highest-grossing films ever domestically, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While Marvel Studios and Sony are in the early stages of planning Spider-Man's future appearances, it's not known at this time just when the hero will appear in the MCU.
Directed by Jon Watts from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, No Way Home is in theaters now. The film arrives on Digital March 22 and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD April 12.
