Spider-Man villains from across the multiverse have invaded the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as past trailers for the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home have shown -- and a newly leaked No Way Home TV spot shows Peter Parker getting a little help from his friends to deal with them.
The 15-second spot opens with Alfred Molina's CGI de-aged Dr. Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus arriving from his world, and observing he's not the only villain to show up gunning for Tom Holland's Peter Parker, stating, "Looks like we've got competition."
"I'll fix this," Peter tells Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange, after Peter interferes with Strange's spell to make the world forget Spider-Man's secret identity, causing it to apparently misfire. "But I'm gonna need some help."
The next scene show's Peter flanked by best friends Ned Leeds and Michelle "MJ" Jones. "Let's catch some multiverse men," rallies Ned. "Just run it by us next time you break the universe," adds MJ. Jacob Batalon and Zendaya reprise their roles of Ned and MJ respectively from the previous two MCU Spider-Man films.
"Deal," responds Peter.
The trailer also shows glimpses of Spidey villains Electro and Sandman. Jamie Foxx played Max Dillon/Electro in 2014's Amazing Spider-Man 2, while Thomas Haden Church played Flint Marko/Sandman in 2007's Spider-Man 3. How exactly the non-powered MJ and Ned intend to help Peter defeat the displaced villains remains unknown.
In the mid-credits scene of 2019's Spider-Man: Far from Home, the Daily Bugle's J. Jonah Jameson unexpectedly reveals Peter's identity as Spider-Man to the world. Trailers for Spider-Man: No Way Home have shown this revelation has not surprisingly caused Peter a great deal of difficulty in his personal life.
Peter then approaches Doctor Strange to undo his being outed as Spider-Man, but when Strange agrees, his spell goes awry and by all indications resulting in a multiversal breach, drawing villains from other realities' versions of Spider-Man into the MCU.
Strange's mystical mishap essentially cements the presence of Sony’s Spider-Man films predating the studio’s partnership with Marvel Studios into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Venom: Let There Be Carnage first introduced this notion in its mid-credits scene, where Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock/Venom are seemingly transported across the multiverse into Spider-Man's world.
The full effect of this multiversal incursion on the life of Spider-Man will be revealed in Spider-Man: No Way Home, in theaters Dec. 17.
