Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have revealed the official poster for Spider-Man: No Way Home, which not only pits Spidey (Tom Holland) against Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), but also offers a glimpse at the returning Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe).
Peter Parker/Spider-Man himself takes center stage on the No Way Home poster, and is seen sporting his "Iron Spider" suit. Spidey is implicitly staring down Doc Ock, with the villain's trademark metal limbs pointing in the hero's direction. Even more interesting is the fact that way in the background, viewers can spot none other than the Green Goblin riding on his iconic glider.
The poster appears to be hinting at a few more Spidey villains factoring into the fight as well. Featured prominently is a bolt of lighting, a possible nod to the rogue known as Electro. There's also a mysterious, brownish cloud of dust in the background. At first glance, it looks like it could be coming from Green Goblin's glider -- until you realize he's miles away from it. In reality, this may actually be the work of the Sandman, which seems even more likely when you notice that the cloud of dust is in the shape of an "S."
Doc Ock's arms and Spidey himself appear almost exactly as they did in another No Way Home poster, a photo of which recently leaked online. However, that poster simply featured Spider-Man against the backdrop of an inverted New York City skyline -- and did not feature the Green Goblin or the additional references to other villains.
Over the past year, one of Hollywood's worst-kept secrets has been that No Way Home -- Spider-Man's third Marvel Cinematic Universe solo film -- would prominently feature the multiverse and bring multiple faces from Spidey's on-screen past into the fray. Alfred Molina, who portrayed Dr. Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus in 2004's Spider-Man 2, made his big return as the character in No Way Home's first official teaser trailer. The teaser also featured one of Green Goblin's signature pumpkin bombs from 2002's Spider-Man, not to mention Norman Osborn/Green Goblin actor Willem Dafoe's signature laugh.
It has also been reported that Thomas Haden Church will reprise his role as Flint Marko/Sandman from 2007's Spider-Man 3 and that Rhys Ifans will reprise his role as Dr. Curt Conners/Lizard from 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man. Another prominent rumor is that Jamie Foxx will reprise his role as Max Dillon/Electro from 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which Foxx himself seemingly confirmed over a year ago. J.K. Simmons, who played the character of J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy before reprising the role for 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home, is also expected to return in No Way Home.
Of course, the most pervasive rumors have been those of Tobey Maguire, star of Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, and Andrew Garfield, star of Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man duology, reprising their roles to join forces with Tom Holland for a sort of live-action Spider-Verse. Another prominent rumor has been that Charlie Cox, star of the Netflix series Marvel's Daredevil, will reprise his role as Matt Murdock in No Way Home.
Nevertheless, what we do know for a fact is that -- in addition to the likes of Holland and Molina -- No Way Home stars Zendaya as MJ, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Marisa Tomei as May Parker, J.B. Smoove as Julius Dell, Benedict Wong as Wong, Tony Revolori as Flash Thompson, Angourie Rice as Betty Brant, Jorge Lendeborg Jr. as Jason Ionello, Hannibal Buress as Coach Wilson and Paula Newsome in an undisclosed role.
Per Sony Pictures, an official synopsis for Spider-Man: No Way Home reads as follows:
For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the high-stakes of being a Super Hero. When he asks for help from Doctor Strange the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.
Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: No Way Home releases in theaters on Dec. 17.
