Dafoe first played Green Goblin in 2002's Spider-Man, which launched Sam Raimi's classic superhero trilogy. Despite the death of his character in the climax of Spider-Man, Dafoe returned for cameos in both sequels, 2004's Spider-Man 2 and 2007's Spider-Man 3. Outside of his role as Goblin, Dafoe is known for his work in such films as 1986's Platoon, 1988's The Last Temptation of Christ and 2018's At Eternity's Gate. He's won a number of high-profile awards for his work and been nominated for several Academy Awards.

No Way Home opens immediately after the end of 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home, which saw Quentin Beck/Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) reveal to the world that Peter Parker (Tom Holland) was Spider-Man. After that revelation begins adversely affecting both his own life and those of his friends, Spider-Man enlists the help of Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) in hiding his identity. However, the spell goes wrong and ends up bringing everyone across the multiverse who knows Peter is Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the two classic Spider-Men and their most iconic villains.
