The monumental success of Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: No Way Home is not done setting records just yet. Recent reports suggest the superhero film is poised to surpass James Cameron's box office hit Avatar over the coming week.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Spider-Man: No Way Home earned $9.6 million for a domestic total of $749 million, only $1 million away from overtaking the $749.8 million grossed by Avatar during its original domestic run. It's worth noting Avatar's domestic total has not been adjusted for inflation.

No Way Home has been projected to surpass Avatar's domestic success for some time. The Marvel Studios/Sony film is currently in its eighth week in theaters. It continues to dominate in weekly earnings, though it has started to fall in rank.

Within the U.S, Avatar is currently the third highest-grossing film of all time, under Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with Endgame earning $858.3 million and The Force Awakens earning $936.6 million. It is noteworthy that Spider-Man: No Way Home was able to reach its current level of success without access to Chinese theaters and during a period of uncertainty following the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

With regard to the worldwide box office, Spider-Man: No Way Home still has a way to go if it is ever to unseat Avatar at the top. Cameron's iconic film grossed $2.8 billion over its lifetime, thanks in part to a re-release in China, which also allowed it to reclaim the top spot from Avengers: Endgame after being temporarily dethroned. Spider-Man: No Way Home has, at the time of writing, grossed approximately $1.02 billion worldwide.

The success of No Way Home has come as a surprise to some, including star Tom Holland. In a recent interview, the actor stated, "I don't think I could ever have imagined it as being so well received by everyone. I mean, I guess I had an idea that people would love this movie, but in no way, shape or form could I have thought it was going to be as big as it has been."

One of the biggest draws has been the return of both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, who are reprising their respective iterations of Spider-Man, along with actors Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Thomas Haden Church, Rhys Ifans and Jamie Foxx, once again taking on the roles of Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Sandman, Lizard and Electro, respectively.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently playing in theaters.
