Reeve Carney, the former star of the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, has been cast in a key role on Showtime's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen-esque Penny Dreadful.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 30-year-old actor will play Dorian Gray in John Logan's eight-episode drama, which mashes together characters from Victorian literature -- Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Oscar Wilde's The Portrait of Dorian Gray and Bram Stoker's Dracula, among them -- for a horror story in which the figures grapple with their "monstrous alienation."

Carney joins Timothy Dalton, Eva Green and Josh Hartnett. Logan will write the series and executive produce with his Skyfall collaborator Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris. Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible) is directing the first two episodes.

Penny Dreadful debuts in spring 2014 on Showtime.
