The 1980s were a time in comics where the popularity of the medium coincided with an influx of new talent and the way readers obtained their comics books. The decade began with the industry recovering from a collapse that nearly destroyed the industry. It ended on the cusp of a speculator boom that saw sales on some milestone issues go into past the one million mark.

Spider-Man is a prime example of that change. He started the decade as a typical Marvel super-hero. By the end of the decade, he was one of the hottest characters, rivaling the X-Men and possessing one of the hottest artists ever to draw the character. Values are given for CGC graded copies of 9.6 or as close as possible.

10 Amazing Spider-Man #239-$98

Amazing Spider-Man #239 - 2nd appearance of Hobgoblin

This is the second appearance of the Hobgoblin. In the 1980s, the first major villain to be introduced that caught fire was the Hobgoblin. He was the unofficial inheritor of the Green Goblin's legacy, making the identity his own by altering the costume's colors. It helped mark him as different so Spider-Man and the criminals that Hobgoblin dealt with knew he wasn't another Green Goblin.

The collectability of a character can be judged by how far the collector's market reacts to early appearances. If the second appearance draws significant interest in higher prices on the market, the character should be considered important. The Hobgoblin's second appearance does just that. Go here to see how high recent sales have been.

9 Amazing Spider-Man #212 - $101

Amazing Spider-Man #212 - 1st appearance of Hydro-Man

This was the first appearance of Hydro-Man. While he seems like a minor villain, his supposed appearance in Spider-Man: Far From Home is probably what drove the value of this issue up. It's not unusual for a character's inclusion, rumored in this case, in a film to drive up the value of their first appearance.

Hydro-Man is not a terribly influential villain. The 1980s saw a plethora of new villains introduced. Hydro-Man is one of the few to be remembered by a majority of fans. To see how copies of this comic recently fared on eBay, just click here.

8 Marvel Team-Up #95 - $110

Marvel Team-Up #95 - first appearance of Mockingbird

This is the first appearance of Bobbi Morse as the hero Mockingbird. In a non-costumed identity, she appeared in Ka-Zar stories as far back as 1971. She later took the identity of the Huntress, before becoming Mockingbird in this issue. The story has a good element to her character, trying to save SHIELD from inside corruption. Adding a cover by Frank Miller doesn't hurt.

The collectibility from this probably stems a lot from the character's portrayal in Agents of SHIELD. Had she gotten the spin-off series or seen her character carried over properly to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then it may rank higher on this list. 7 Amazing Spider-Man #298 - $146

Amazing Spider-Man #298 - First Todd McFarlane

This is Todd McFarlane's first issue. There are a few creators that can drive up the value of a comic. Usually, it also has to tie in with a comic that they're tied to historically. This issue has the added incentive of technically the first appearance of Venom.

At the end of the issue, Venom is teased by showing Eddie Brock's hands. Venom's actual first appearance is a myriad of cameos and teases. Over the years, various cameos have seen speculation that has driven their value up. The real thing driving up sales on sites like eBay, though, is the first work of Todd McFarlane on Spider-Man.

6 Marvel Team-Up #141 - $191

Marvel Team-Up #141 - 2nd appearance of Spider-Man's black costume

This is officially the second appearance of the black Spider-Man costume. However, legend has it that both it and Amazing Spider-Man #252 came out the same week. Officially, the story begins in Amazing Spider-Man, making it the first appearance. However, if a seller touts this as the first appearance, they're not technically wrong. Most likely, it came out second.

Thus, it gets really muddled with Venom and early symbiote appearances. The market has pretty much decided that this issue is not as collectible. However, completists among Venom collectors must include this issue in their collections. As a bonus, there's a cover by Art Adams and Mike Mignola. 5 Amazing Spider-Man #210 - $210

Amazing Spider-Man #210 is the first appearance of Madame Web

This is the first appearance of Madame Web. She became an important figure in Spider-Man's story, especially towards the end of the 1990s. She's continued to be a seldom-used, but still a recurring character in the Spider-Man titles.

The character is often used quite well, giving everything from vague clues to direct intelligence and assistance to heroes. Currently dead, it wouldn't be surprising to see her pop up again. However, sales of her first appearance have been a little spare on eBay recently.

4 Marvel Super-Heroes: Secret Wars #8 - $212

Secret Wars #8 - Origin of the Venom symbiote

The origin of Spider-Man's black costume was something that fans eagerly waited for. Since the first teases of it saw print in fandom publications and Marvel Age #12, readers were excited. Seeing the special powers that the suit had only added to the speculation about its origins. Secret Wars #8 finally delivered on an origin, brief as it was.

When we see it, Spider-Man pulls it from a machine that he thinks is making clothing. As will be revealed, the machine is holding an alien symbiote. That symbiote goes on to create the character known as Venom. It's no wonder that it fetches some of the highest prices for Spider-Man comics outside of the Silver Age. Just take a look at what it has sold for recently.

3 Amazing Spider-Man #252 - $227

Amazing Spider-Man #252 is the first appearance of the black costume

This is the first chronological appearance of Spider-Man's black costume. The cover is an homage to Amazing Fantasy#15, which only seems right. From the very beginning, things seemed strange about this new costume.

It made its own webbing. It could transform into his civilian clothes. It could recede to expose Peter's mouth if he needed to eat or kiss someone like the Black Cat. All of that speculation started here and collectors will certainly pay for it, as you can see here.

2  2 Amazing Spider-Man #238 - $567

The key to finding this comic in the best condition possible is the Tattooz insert. Some copies have had the insert removed, and it definitely affects the value. CGC Graded copies will make note of the insert. As for the comic itself, the first appearance of the Hobgoblin is the big draw.

The Hobgoblin's identity became the talk among fans of the wall-crawler. His popularity also saw the legacy of the Green Goblin lie dormant for the decade. When Norman Osborn eventually returned from the dead, it was made all the more significant because there had been no other Green Goblin, just the Hobgoblin. 1 Amazing Spider-Man #300 - $1500

Amazing Spider-Man #300 - First Appearance Venom

The landmark issue for the 1980s came at the end of the decade. It had been a long time before a Spider-Man villain became legendary. Venom was teased for a few issues, even before it was decided exactly what form he would take. Todd McFarlane gave the character a smile that would morph over time to include a long tongue. This is the comic where it all started.

Fans that have a copy treasure it and many will get it graded to preserve the investment they have made. According to gocollect.com, CGC has graded thousands of copies. If you've got a few hundred dollars to spend, you can see what some have sold for recently.
