The following contains spoilers for Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

During a fight with the Scorpion in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1 (by Cody Ziglar, Federico Vicentini, Bryan Valenza, and VC’s Corey Petit), Miles saves the life of a girl named Raneem who is much more than an innocent bystander. Miles recently won a lottery that afforded him the opportunity to attend Brooklyn Visions Academy, however, his good fortune is coming at a price. Not only is he faced with scrutiny from his teachers and classmates, but those less fortunate are willing to resort to villainous ways of getting what they feel they deserve.

It's revealed that Raneem is a respected member of her community and tends to look out for those less fortunate. She regularly brings food for a local homeless woman and her dog as well as treats this charity almost as a duty. By all accounts, Raneem is a good person with good intentions. However, she doesn’t appear to feel the same about Miles Morales, aka, Spider-Man.

Raneem May End Up Being Spider-Man's Most Powerful AdversaryMiles Morales talking to Raneem

It’s revealed at the end of the issue that Raneem knows that Spider-Man is Miles Morales. Though it isn’t said how she figured out his secret identity, she seems to have a vendetta against Miles. She mentions that not everyone is so lucky to win a lottery that improves their station in life, and hints at using this information to hurt Miles. However, coupled with the kind of person Raneem seems to be, she gives off a kind of “Robin Hood” vibe, as she’s already been shown giving to the poor.

This could be the saving grace when it comes down to Miles either defeating Raneem or reaching some kind of common ground with her. However, it has been revealed that Raneem will take the name “Rabble”, and as this first issue shows, she’s also a technological genius. Given Raneem's vendetta against Miles and the knowledge of his identity, Raneem is sure to be a challenge in Miles’ life that he may not be able to handle right now.

Miles Morales' Spider-Man is Already Struggling in Life

Miles Morales saving Raneem

On the outside, Miles seems to have everything going for him. He is back in his classic suit with some powerful upgrades. He is at the top of his crime-fighting game as he swiftly takes down the Scorpion. He has the love and support of his parents, and he’s attending a prestigious school. But, on the inside Miles is struggling more than ever before. He’s at odds with himself dealing with the weight of the responsibility of Spider-Man, and he just got suspended from school. Though he’s dealt with far greater challenges on the outside, his current internal struggles may turn out to be his biggest battle yet.

With everything that Miles is going through right now, he’s more vulnerable and distracted than ever before. The fact that he’s able to handle the Scorpion so fast is a tribute to his sheer abilities and power that he’s fought so hard to master. But when put to the test, the fact that Miles isn’t completely focused and free from distraction when he’s Spider-Man is something that could end up hurting more than himself. Now he’s about to face a new villain who knows his identity and regardless of physical abilities, that knowledge is going to be a power that could destroy Miles’ world.
