Spider-Man: Miles Morales is Insomniac Games' upcoming follow-up to 2018's Marvel's Spider-ManThe short standalone game is set to focus on a recently empowered Miles Morales, who appeared as a supporting character in the previous game, as he grows into the role of Spider-Man. This will be a coming-of-age story for Miles, who is quickly forced to learn the ropes when he is left alone to watch over New York City.

A recent promotional video from Insomniac's Twitter features a series of text messages exchanged between Miles and Peter Parker. The two discuss power and responsibility, their dual lives as Spider-Man and the danger of getting pizza stains on a superhero costume. However, this promotional video also serves as a set-up for the plot of Spider-Man: Miles Morales by explaining where Peter has gone while Miles is left to patrol the city on his own.

At the end of Silver Lining, a 2019 DLC campaign for Marvel's Spider-Man, Mary Jane Watson informs Peter that she is being sent to the fictional country of Symkaria to report on an intense civil war taking place there. MJ and Peter have recently reignited their romantic relationship, and while he makes no plans to join her he is disheartened to hear that she will be traveling abroad without him.

However, this text exchange seems to reveal that Peter actually decided to join MJ in Symkaria. Utilizing his years of photography experience, Peter functions as MJ's photographer, snapping pictures as she conducts interviews. This explanation for Peter's absence from New York City in Miles Morales fits well within Insomniac's version of the Spider-Man mythos.

It is unlikely that Peter would be comfortable with Mary Jane traveling to a country in the grips of a civil war, especially now that the two are dating again. Peter is also out of a job following the events of the previous game, so the trip to Symkaria is an opportunity for him to apply his photography skills. Finally, Peter's absence is the perfect test of Miles' skills and abilities, throwing him into a situation where he must defend New York all by himself.

The upcoming game shifts the series' spotlight onto Miles Morales, making him the sole focus of this standalone title. Having Peter travel to Symkaria with Mary Jane is a perfect excuse to remove him from the city for a time and give Miles a chance to shine by himself. With Mary Jane traveling abroad and in need of a skilled photographer, and Miles ready to protect the city on his own, journeying to Symkaria is a logical choice for Insomniac's version of Peter Parker.
