One of the most enjoyable elements of team-ups in the Marvel Universe is seeing the friendships that erupt between the heroes, and how those relationships develop -- with one of the best recent ones being the connection between Miles Morales and Kamala Khan.

Ms. Marvel is Spider-Man's most amazing friend -- and they got a sweet moment together in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #24, cementing that fact.

Ms. Marvel and Miles Morales play basketball in Marvel Comics

Miles Morales and Kamala Khan -- Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel respectively -- are two of the most high-profile young heroes currently in the Marvel Universe. The pair were both elevated to the position of Avenger (alongside their fellow young hero Nova), and the three splintered away from the group after disagreeing with their elders, leading to the formation of the modern Champions. During that time, Ms. Marvel and Spider-Man have become close friends -- with occasional hints that Spider-Man may have a bit of a crush on her. As time wore on, the pair have been able to turn to each other in times of crisis -- most recently during King in Black, where Miles was seriously injured saving Kamala from the influence of Knull.

With New York trying to pick itself up in the aftermath of Knull's invasion of Earth, Miles and Kamala take the chance to hang out outside of their work as superheroes. The pair play basketball in costume, save a bunch of civilians from a collapsing building, and even intimidate the corner cutting landlord who allowed his building to fall into such disrepair. The two even get ice cream at a place that Miles reveals that he learned about from his ex-girlfriend. A loaded silence between the pair is broken by Kamala alluding to her own romantic troubles. She even references her brief romance with her best friend Bruno, and how they work better as friends. Miles points out how that's good, because having good friends is a more important thing to have in life -- something Kamala agrees with as they walk down the street.

Throughout the issue, Kamala and Miles frequently bring each other up, with Kamala even being the one to hold Spider-Man at bay from getting too dark during a later interrogation. Because of their shared youth and experience, the two heroes can relate to one another more than almost anyone else. They both have two of the strongest hearts of any hero in the Marvel Universe, often supporting each other in times of crisis. Miles was once even willing to deal with Mephisto in exchange for helping save her life. There have been hints that the two characters might possibly have feelings for one another, which could complicate their lives even further. That's why it's exciting to see them maturely and quietly decide not to head down that path.

It's far more interesting to see them cement their friendship. Their time together as the backbone of the Champions makes them the statesmen for an entire generation of heroes, and it's a role they've earned. The fact that they can always have each other's backs as friends going forward goes a long way towards ensuring the pair of them (alongside Nova) are Marvel's new central trio, which even carries over into the upcoming "Heroes Reborn" version of the Marvel Universe -- even if they're inspired by other heroes, these three work amazingly together. It's exciting to see Kamala and Miles come together while recognizing that a romance isn't in the cards, giving two young heroes the friend they sorely need.
