UPDATE: Despite the Sony Interactive Entertainment executive's comments, Insomniac Games claims Spider-Man: Miles Morales is, in fact, a standalone release, promising more details to be revealed at a later date. Comparisons have been made to 2017's Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.
At Sony's event unveiling the PlayStation 5, Spider-Man: Miles Morales was officially announced as a follow-up to Insomniac Games' smash-hit 2018 PlayStation 4 title Spider-Man. However, while Miles Morales initially appeared to be a full-blown sequel, Sony has now clarified that the game is actually an expansion that will be released alongside an enhanced version of Spider-Man.
Per The Telegraph, Insomniac's Spider-Man game for the PS5 is a remastered version of the 2018 title, which includes a "substantial" expansion. The publication describes Miles Morales as "more akin to an expansion bolted on to an upgraded version of the original title." Moreover, Simon Rutter -- Sony Interactive Entertainment's Executive Vice President of European Business -- explained to The Telegraph that the expansion would include "major enhancements" to Spider-Man.
"I guess you could call it an expansion and an enhancement to the previous game," Rutter said. "There's a substantial Miles Morales component -- which is the expansion element -- but also within the game as well there's been major enhancements to the game and the game engine, obviously deploying some of the major PlayStation 5 technology and features."
Developed by Insomniac, Marvel's Spider-Man released in September of 2018. The PlayStation-exclusive became one of the fastest-selling games of the year, one of the best-selling PS4 games of all time and the fastest-selling superhero game in the United States. It was also praised critically, earning several end-of-the-year accolades and releasing a Game of the Year edition in August of 2019. The game followed Peter Parker in his battle against the Sinister Six, among other villains, with Miles making an appearance as well.
