Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacey's relationships with Peter Parker are nothing short of iconic. They were brought to life with Kirsten Dunst playing Mary Jane in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacey in Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man films. When Peter Parker was introduced into the MCU, fans were speculative over who would appear as his love interest in his stand-alone films. Thus entered Zendaya as Michelle Jones or MJ, for short. While Zendaya's Michelle is not a character pulled directly from the comics, this would not be the first Michele that Peter Parker was romantically connected to.

In Amazing Spider-Man #584 by Marc Guggenheim, John Romita Jr., Klaus Johnson, and Dean White, Carlie Cooper discovers a stash of Spider Tracers underneath Vin Gonzales' (Carlie's partner and Peter Parker's roommate) bed. This leads to Vin being accused of being the Spider Tracer Killer. He has been helping to plant tracers on dead bodies throughout the city in order to frame Spider-Man for murder. With Vin set for trial, he reaches out to his lawyer and sister Michele Gonzales for legal help. She works out a plea deal for him which lands him in jail for six months.

Fast forward to Amazing Spider-Man #594 by Mark Waid, Barry Kitson, and Michael Mckone. Peter has returned home from a dimension jumping adventure with the Fantastic Four. After Peter enters his apartment, he is confronted by Michele who claims to have been there for 6 weeks. She states that she co-signed the lease with her brother so the apartment is in her name and she plans to stay.

Peter Parker Introduces Michele

Peter continues to save the city until the day of his Aunt May's wedding to J. Jonah Jameson Sr. in The Amazing Spider-Man #600 by Joe Kelly, Marco Checchetto, and Chris Chuckry. Peter is preparing for the wedding while Michele, in her Mark Sanchez Jets' jersey, mocks him for his bruises. When it's revealed that Peter is attending the event alone, Michele invites herself. After the wedding, Mary Jane reappears after a long hiatus and sends Peter into a nervous fit. Hoping to calm his nerves, Parker turns to alcohol.

Peter awakens the next morning in a drunken stupor, realizing that he is not alone in his bed. Peter initially mistakes the mystery lover for MJ but quickly sees that it is Michele. Michele becomes aware that Pete does not remember the night before and leaves in a huff. Pete's drunken stupor and hangover are later revealed to be a fabrication as Michele was giving him ginger ale instead of alcohol. All seems to be forgiven when Pete returns that night to a plate of cookies... though the fridge has been chained shut.

Michele Punches Peter Parker

The Chameleon steals Spider-Man's Peter Parker identity and heads to Peter's apartment in Amazing Spider-Man #603 by Fred Van Lente, Robert Atkins, and Jeremy Cox. Michele confronts Chameleon, thinking that he is Peter, and discusses their living situation. Chameleon stops Michele after she suggests he find a new place to live and kisses her as they slide behind the countertop. This causes more issues between the two when the real Peter returns. Michele punches Peter for claiming Chameleon seduced her and jokingly starts charging him for the basic conveniences that he uses in the apartment.

Michele and Peter remain platonic roommates until The Amazing Spider-Man #648 by Dan Slott, Humberto Ramos, Carlos Cuevas, and Edgar Delgado. After Spidey took down Octavious with the help of the Avengers, Parker returns home to find Michele outside his door. Vin's case has been resolved and she has decided to return home to Chicago.

Michele's introduction came at one of the busiest times in Peter's love life. Between the flirtations of Norah Winters, Mary Jane's return, and his big-screen romance with Black Cat, it's hard to believe that Pete was able to work in another love interest. While Zendaya's Michelle is much different than the character who appeared in the comics, both still hold a place in Spider-Man lore.
