The following contains spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #21 from Marvel Comics.

A CBR exclusive preview for Marvel's Amazing Spider-Man #21 reveals new clues as to why Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson may have broken up.

Amazing Spider-Man #21 comes from writer Zeb Wells, penciler John Romita Jr., inker Scott Hanna, colorist Marcio Menyz and letterer VC's Joe Caramagna. In the preview, Mary Jane is standing with her new partner, Paul, and two children who have continuously referred to her as "mommy" when a mysterious villain known only as the "Scribble Man" appears. Terrified, Mary Jane tells Paul and the children to run, at which point Paul makes a comment about how something like this has happened before. Mary Jane proceeds to call Peter, who she's hardly spoken to throughout the course of the current Amazing Spider-Man run, to tell him "he's back."

Spider-Man's Relationship With Mary Jane Has Become Purely Platonic

Marvel's Amazing Spider-Man #1 first revealed Peter and Mary Jane had broken up, although the circumstances that led to the decision have remained a mystery. Similarly, Peter has been pushed aside and hated by a number of his former colleagues and friends (apart from a supposedly reformed Norman Osborn, who is now operating as the Gold Goblin) due to an unknown event that occurred in New York City and seemingly has ties to the Scribble Man and Mary Jane.

Since then, Peter has repeatedly tried to reconnect with Mary Jane with little to no luck and, instead, has once again found himself growing close to Black Cat/Felicia Hardy. Following the events of Dark Web, the two spent a weekend together where Peter said he now views Mary Jane as a "sister" or "best friend." He told Felicia, "I love her. I always have, and part of me always will. But I think that love has changed, you know? Like capital L to lowercase...or the other way around. Whichever makes sense."

Amazing Spider-Man #21 features cover art by Romita Jr., Hanna and Menyz and variant cover art by Jan Bazaldua, David Curiel, Vitale Mangiatordi and Dustin Weaver. The issue releases March 8, 2023, from Marvel Comics.
