Adam Scott, who plays Mark Scout on Severance, has joined Sony's upcoming Madame Web film.

According to Variety, Scott will play a role in the upcoming Madame Web film. The outlet did not specify who Scott will play in the film, which will be an origin story for Dakota Johnson's titular clairvoyant who finds herself able to "see within the spider world itself."

Scott is an actor known for his works on such projects as Parks and Recreation, The Good Place and Severance. As a result of his work on that Apple TV+ series, Scott was recently nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. The series, which received a total of 14 nominations, earned critical acclaim and was renewed for a second season earlier this year. Severance Season 2 does not have a release date as of the time of this article's writing.

In addition to Johnson and Scott, several other key actors have joined the project, including Emma Roberts, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O'Connor, Mike Epps and more. There have been rumors that, while the project is billed as a Madame Web movie, the movie is actually something else and only using the character as a sort of cover. Another report claims Madame Web is meant to be Sony's answer to Doctor Strange due to its emphasis on the mystical.

Sony's Spider-Man Universe began with Venom in 2018. While not a critical darling, that film proved a massive financial success, earning more than $856 million worldwide. Its 2021 sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, fared about as well critically and only earned around $506 million commercially. However, Let There Be Carnage was released during the COVID-19 pandemic, which almost certainly affected its box office performance. Morbius, the most recent movie in Sony's universe, received negative reviews and only earned around $163 million worldwide against a budget of between $75 and 83 million.

Sony has several Spider-Man universe movies in the production pipeline at this time, including Kraven the Hunter, which will focus on Aaron Taylor-Johnson's titular character. Singer Bad Bunny will also star in a solo film based on El Muerto, a relatively minor Spider-Man character.

Directed by S.J. Clarkson from a script by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, Madame Web is slated for release on July 7, 2023.
