As we reported yesterday at CBR, director Marc Webb will take the helm of Sony’s Spider-Man franchise. Webb made “(500) Days of Summer” last year and will take the character back to high school. “This is a dream come true and I couldn’t be more aware of the challenge, responsibility, or opportunity. Sam Raimi’s virtuoso rendering of Spider-Man is a humbling precedent to follow and build upon.” While some fear the franchise will be mired in a “Smallville” style focus on immature relationships and shy away from action, I think the first film rushed through the high school aspect a little too fast. That said, I don’t know if stretching that material across three films, as reported, is a good idea either. Meanwhile, Aceshowbiz.com (via Latino Review) hears tell of twenty-eight year old actor Jim Sturgess has been offered the part. Their source was said to be the Twitter feed of “Adulthood” director and former Doctor Who companion Noel Clarke, but this has turned out to be incorrect. Aceshowbiz has since taken down the page entirely. A twenty-eight years old (British) actor flies in the face of the plan to return Spidey to high school, so I can’t help but think Mysterio had returned to shroud the project in mist.

JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRISIS ON TWO EARTHS
Here at CBR, we have a clip from the upcoming direct-to-video flick which sees the League battling the Crime Syndicate. The film is co-directed by Lauren Montgomery and Sam Liu. Montgomery directed the strong “Green Lantern” and “Wonder Woman” films while Liu helmed the action packed “Superman/Batman: Public Enemies,” so bring the two together should play well to their strengths. Our clips is definitely from Liu’s action sensibility.
Release date: February 23rd, 2010
Remember that movie “Push” that came out last year with that creepy girl and Chris Evans? According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s about to become a series. “The series will purportedly be an extension of the science-fiction thriller, centered on people with paranormal powers who band together to take down a corrupt government agency,” they write. “Watchmen” screenwriter and Solid Snake voice actor David Hayter will pen the pilot. It might be the right time for such a series, but since one of the hooks of the film was showing a lot of material “Heroes” could only imply because of TV budgets, I wonder how the premise will work on restricted by weekly finances.
Release date: TBA
Micheal Ausiello at Entertainment Weekly has learned plans are afoot for Annette O’Toole to return to the series as Martha Kent. “Producers are still working out the exact timing of Martha’s reappearance, but a ‘Smallville’ insider tells me it’ll most likely fall during May sweeps. That same source hints that the mother-son reunion will be rocked by an ‘unexpected surprise’ or two,” he writes. This being “Smallville,” you can almost lay odds on which villain Martha has married. I’m going to go with Darkseid because, well, “Darkseid is.” Meanwhile, we have stills from the upcoming “Absolute Justice.” This two-hour episode looks just swell.
New episode: Janurary 22nd, 2010
SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD
Ain’t it Cool News has heard from someone who has seen a rough cut of the film. “What they have right now (other than some rough audio patches and a lot of unfinished effects) is pretty damn remarkable,” writes their scooper. Also, there is a video compiled from others that have seen the film.
Starring Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, release date: Summer 2010
RAIN SOAKED WEDNESDAY
Since I haven’t had to go into the city this week, I’ve enjoyed the rain. Luckily, I haven’t had a black out. While a lot of Southern California’s hysterics with rain is just hyperbole, we occasionally get storms as fierce as an NBC contract dispute. These storms rage and genuinely endanger people. The local news has a habit of making any rain seem like these major storms and thus the rest of the countries believes we can’t handle weather. Meanwhile, if any of you in the great, wide Internet discover something awesome, disheartening, just plain weird, or spot Mysterio up to his usual hi-jinks, let us know! Take credit, come up with a clever nickname, or go anonymous. The choice is yours. Fresh rumors and movie news every weekday morning. I am Erik Amaya bracing for the future threat of continuing Stormwatch Team Coverage on the local news.
