Coming out of a very strong 2018 for superhero and comic book-based films, a lot of eyes were on this year's Academy Awards to see if some of the biggest movies of the year would earn themselves a prestigious nomination.

It's been a long wait, but the Oscar nominations are finally here: the fan-favorite and critically-acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has just been nominated for Best Animated Film.

Sony's Into the Spider-Verse is joined by Disney's Ralph Breaks the Internet, Pixar's Incredibles 2, Fox Searchlight Pictures' Isle of Dogs, and Toho's Mirai for a total of five nominees.

The Spider-Man animated film has already earned plenty of accolades, like the Award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Picture at the Producers Guild Awards, as well as the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Animated.

We will find out if the film will win Oscar gold when the Academy Awards air Sunday, Feb. 24.

Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse stars Shameik Moore, Brian Tyree Henry, Jake Johnson, Mahershala Ali, Hailee Steinfeld, Liev Schreiber, Luna Lauren Velez, Lily Tomlin, Nicolas Cage, John Mulaney and Kimiko Glenn. The film is in theaters now.
